Project Planning
Project Status Updates
Micro-Hydro
This team is getting ready to build prototype over next couple of days.
They’ve selected a Darius turbine design with three straight blades. Planning
to test initially in a tank, and then take system to a river for subsequent
tests.
Solar Water Disinfection
This group may need to change community partners. The original contact in
Tibet has clarified local needs, raising two issues:
1. They have plenty of soda bottles available
2. Many communities are able to boil water.
So they may consider Zambia or another country as a better partner for the
project.
Design refinements: changing the handle construction and location so it
doesn’t consume water-carrying volume.
Case tracking
Two team members have been in Lesotho over past couple of weeks, able to
meet with Power of Love staff, follow them around and collect great
information. Also they are increasing interactions with the MIT software
development team.
Maya Pedal
Team members got to visit Guatemala and MayaPedal. In addition, they’ve
spoken to a women’s cooperative that’s interested in this machine.
In terms of design and prototyping, a successful spin-dry test suggests this
feature is feasible; the team had been unsure.
Water collection
Focus is on collecting rain water with filtering. Now evaluating materials;
they will build a prototype, either ¼ or 1/8 size.
Planning assignments
Project plan: keep working on these, add more detail.

Project Status Updates

Micro-Hydro

This team is getting ready to build prototype over next couple of days. They’ve selected a Darius turbine design with three straight blades. Planning to test initially in a tank, and then take system to a river for subsequent tests.

Solar Water Disinfection

This group may need to change community partners. The original contact in Tibet has clarified local needs, raising two issues:

  1. They have plenty of soda bottles available
  2. Many communities are able to boil water.

So they may consider Zambia or another country as a better partner for the project.

Design refinements: changing the handle construction and location so it doesn’t consume water-carrying volume.

Case tracking

Two team members have been in Lesotho over past couple of weeks, able to meet with Power of Love staff, follow them around and collect great information. Also they are increasing interactions with the MIT software development team.

Maya Pedal

Team members got to visit Guatemala and MayaPedal. In addition, they’ve spoken to a women’s cooperative that’s interested in this machine.

In terms of design and prototyping, a successful spin-dry test suggests this feature is feasible; the team had been unsure.

Water collection

Focus is on collecting rain water with filtering. Now evaluating materials; they will build a prototype, either ¼ or 1/8 size.

Planning assignments

Project plan: keep working on these, add more detail.

Fabrication plan: change to syllabus, should start this now as well. This plan lays out in greater detail the specific steps to build the system, precise materials lists, etc. Since each project is unique, the precise contents of the plan will vary.
