Phys 104 Section 536: TM 10/9/ Lab 3: Projectile Motion Lab Partner: B.N. “Honor Pledge” – A.R.
Abstract: The point of this lab was to gain an understanding of one-dimensional motion by examining the motion of a low friction air cart as it moved down a linear air cushioned track inclined at an angle. The track was at an average angle of 2.63 degrees, and x=0 was the initial position of the cart. The cart was let go from rest and traveled the following distances: 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 meters. In Part 1 of this lab, a stopwatch measured each trial, and each trial was performed between 3 and 6 times, depending on how precise the measured values were to one another. The cart’s velocity steadily increased as time increased. The relationship between vx and x can be seen by the following equation: v^2 x=2ax. Part 2 of the lab differed only in that it introduced a photogate that was used to measure the time of passage of the cart rather than the cart’s velocity.
