I am writing to inform you about a project I’m managing. My hope is that once you’re through this proposal, you will recognize the potential of this project and will be encouraged to support it financially.
The Problem:
The problem is glaring. If there is any disaster, like the ill-fated earthquake that shook Pakistan a few years back, there is no effective means of communication when organizing relief efforts except for satellite phones which are expensive. In cases like these disasters, normal communication methods go down adding to the chaos. Another scenario is in a battlefield. All signals are jammed so secure radios are used which have limited range. The current solutions, if available, are complex and require frequent maintenance (bad battery life in many cases).
Our proposed solution:
We propose to address these issues through a Zigbee enabled wireless network. Our network will be first of its kind in Pakistan. It will allow two points to communicate and we will add the functionality of a camera in the network. The main selling point of the project is its versatility. It can be customized for any range (upto 2 miles between each node), any number of nodes (nodes are automatically recognized and added to network) and application (camera for fire detection or surveillance in battlefield). Additional features could be added as requested by customer.
Detail:
We will design a network which will be reliable, easy to install, easy to operate and require minimum maintenance. Our network will be able to operate for months before requiring a change of power source. It will also be self-healing (automatic discovery of alternate routes if a link goes down) for minimal maintenance hassle.
We will use four intermediate nodes and two base stations. The nodes will be suspended in air using weather balloons because we want optimum performance which is achieved in a wireless network when line of sight is clear.
Each node will be made up of a Zigbee radio, its module and a processor. One node (financial constraint) will also have a camera. The base stations will have laptops and radios with modules.
Milestones:
Build a smaller network on ground. Test it in actual conditions (nodes suspended with balloons). Build the complete network with base stations and radios on ground. Test it in actual conditions.
Further breakdown of milestones is available on request.
Duration:
We have completed all the research. We have also started work on the image processing part of the project through which we will detect a fire or similar disaster in the images taken by the camera. We can start work on the network as soon as we get the hardware. We aim to complete it in less than 5 months.
Evaluation:
To ensure you that your money is put to good use, we are willing to provide bi-monthly reports on our progress. You can visit anytime to see us in action in our working environment. We will also accommodate a request for an independent observer.
