I’m sure before you signed up for this course you could have told someone that psychology is the study of thought and behavior. But what does
that really mean? What are the basic theories that help explain why we do what we actually do? Is common sense as accurate as we tend to think?
In learning to see and think about ourselves and our world from a scientific perspective, we’ll see that understanding the reason why we do what
we do can be tremendously helpful in our own daily lives.

WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY?

I’m sure before you signed up for this course you could have told someone that psychology is the study of thought and behavior. But what does that really mean? What are the basic theories that help explain why we do what we actually do? Is common sense as accurate as we tend to think? In learning to see and think about ourselves and our world from a scientific perspective, we’ll see that understanding the reason why we do what we do can be tremendously helpful in our own daily lives.

In collaboration with Dr. Scott Roberts and Dr. Ryan Curtis, we have prepared a free, open-source online textbook blog. You are not required to purchase a textbook for this course. You are required to register for a web-based Turning Technologies license, which is provided to all UMD students free of charge. See this page for details, or the “Clickers” tab on the ELMS course page to help you get your device registered. Do not purchase a clicker device.

COURSEWORK AND FORMAT

The learning objectives for this course are based on the University’s Gen Ed Natural Sciences objectives and the Department of Psychology’s learning outcomes: 1) Knowledge in psychology, 2) Scientific inquiry & critical thinking, 3) Ethics, 4) Multiculturalism & diversity, 5) Communication, and 6) Professional development. All aspects of this course will be completed online. There are no in-person class meetings. If you do wish to meet with your classmates in person to complete coursework, please do so responsibly.

WORKSHEETS

Before each full class meeting, you will complete a worksheet designed to highlight information in the assigned readings and assess your learning of the material. The worksheets are based off the course blog and each worksheet corresponds to a specific module on the blog. You can expect each worksheet to require about 2 hours each. Answers are submitted in a quiz on ELMS. Most worksheets are due on Wednesdays at 11:59pm (see course schedule below). You are welcome (and encouraged) to work cooperatively on these worksheets, though all answers submitted must represent only your own work. The worksheets are worth 3 0% of your course grade.

FULL CLASS MEETINGS

Each full class meeting on Thursday afternoon will be held online via Zoom. If possible, you are expected to attend and participate through web-based poll questions and discussions. Full class meetings will consist of a combination of presentations and activities based on weekly prompts. You are responsible to have a working device (e.g., smartphone, tablet, laptop) for all class meetings and activities, along with an active web-based Turning Technologies account.

PARTICIPATION

In order to earn full credit for participation in the course, you must fulfill 4 requirements. Each of these will be scored only for completion. Participation counts for 3 0% of your course grade.

  1. Discussion Thread Posts. On ELMS there are discussion threads on which you can ask questions about the material, post comments/replies, provide feedback to each other, and contribute in other ways (e.g., posting links to videos or news articles). You must make 5 discussion posts. Discussion posts must be completed by the last day of classes ( before final exam week), nd all 5 cannot all be completed during the final 2 weeks of the course. a. Mini Reflections. Following each full class meeting, I will present you with a reflection prompt. Responses to these prompts are OPTIONAL and can be used to facilitate your Discussion Thread posts. If time permits, we will have breakout rooms through which you can share thoughts with each other on these reflections.

GRADES

Worksheets (1 2 ) = 30 % Participation = 30 %

  • Discussion Reading Activities (> 4 ) 10 %
  • Turning Point Clicker Responses OR Interactive Videos (>10) 10 % Scientific Analysis Essays ( 6 ) = 40 % Total = 100%
