BIOL 1103L Assignment: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis
Respond to the questions as you work through the lab activities in class. Although you will be
working in groups, responses should be in your own words!
Qualitative Analysis
1. Based on your observations, what order would the samples A, B, and C be placed in from least
to most concentrated? (1 pt)
B, A, C. The observation is depended on the light or deep of the colors of those samples, B
seems like the lightest, and the C seems like who has the deepest color.
2. Based on your ordering of the known samples, where would you place your unknown sample in
the order? (1 pt)
B, A,C, unknown sample. The unknown sample seems have the highest concentration, because
the color is much deeper than others.
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of qualitative analysis? (2 pts)
The advantage is that the analysis allows for a good flexibility, also, quanlitative could explain
something that numbers can not to reveal; and the disadvantage is that may lead to a self-
bias, because the result determination is based on one’s common sense, also the answer can
only based on the questions that you give instead of getting another kind of result.
Quantitative Analysis
4. Create a table of the absorbance and concentrations for the known samples, and record the
absorbance value of the unknown sample. (1 pt)
A B C Unknown
Absorbance 0.588 0.332 0.628 1.307
Concentrations 10% 5% 15% 25%
5. Using the standard curve created in lab and the absorbance value for your unknown, what is the
concentration of the unknown sample? (1 pt)
The concentration of the unknown sample is 25%.
6. What are the advantages and disadvantages of quantitative analysis? (2 pts)
One advantage is that the quantitative analysis can be tested and checked over times. Also, the result is
more straightforward. The disadvantage for quantitative is that the result is huge rely on the data
amount. The researcher is easier to focus only on the number instead of seeing things comprehensively.
