odometer, none of which he patented. In an old survey of 105 people, it was found that:

Draw a Venn diagram to describe this survey and answer the following questions:
(a) How many people have none of these three of Benjamin Franklin’s inventions?

phenomenon known as ocular dominance, and it is estimated that two-thirds of humans are right-eye
dominant. Similarly, most humans are right handed, but there are the obvious exceptions. Consider
the following data collected from Lucinda Surber’s 4th grade class in the 2006-2007 acaemic year,
in which 21 students were surveyed:
15 students are left-eyed
18 students are right-handed
1 student is right-eyed and left-handed
Create a Venn diagram to describe the above situation, and determine how many students are both
left-eyed and right-handed.

  1. A swimming gorilla has never been observed directly, but there is still a debate on whether they don’t swim because they can’t or because they dislike swimming. There are also some people who believe that gorillas possess the ability to learn to swim. For this problem, however, it will be assumed that gorillas cannot swim. This puts gorillas in pretty exclusive company. The only other mammals besides gorillas that cannot swim are bats. Bats are also considered to be the only mammals capable of sustainable flight. “Sustainable” is a necessary qualifier as some people are tempted to include flying squirrels in the set of flying mammals. Outside of the mammal class there various animals that both fly and swim. Consider the following Venn diagram relating mammals, animals that fly, and animals that swim.

(a) Describe what kinds of animals belong in each section (a, b, c, d, e, f, g) and, if possible, give an example for each section of an animal in the section.

(b) Give an example, if possible, of an animal that is not in any of the three sets.
