Random Sampling and Random Assignment
Suppose we want to select 10 objects at random from 70 objects. So we think of numbering the 70
objects from 1 to 70 and then choose 10 numbers in that range at random.
In Minitab Express, choose Data > Random Data and then fill in the dialog box appropriately. In the
drop-down menu, choose “Integer” instead of all the other choices. Then fill in the dialog box as
indicated here. The resulting sample is in C1.

Random Sampling and Random Assignment

Suppose we want to select 10 objects at random from 70 objects. So we think of numbering the 70 objects from 1 to 70 and then choose 10 numbers in that range at random.

In Minitab Express, choose Data > Random Data and then fill in the dialog box appropriately. In the drop-down menu, choose “Integer” instead of all the other choices. Then fill in the dialog box as indicated here. The resulting sample is in C1.

Suppose we need to randomly assign 60 subjects to 3 treatments. It is easy to do that by choosing to pick a sample of size 60 from a population of size 60 in the same way as illustrated in the previous example. That will produce a list of the 60 ID numbers in random order, so we choose the first 20 of the list for the first treatment, the second 20 of the list for the second treatment, and the remaining 20 for the third treatment.

Suppose that, instead, we have a list of 8 names of the entire population, and we want to choose 2 names at random. We can do that by Data > Random Sample and then fill in the dialog box as indicated.
