Redesign User Interface
Select a simple user interface you encounter in your daily life, such as a website or control
display, which has caused frustrations to you due to its usability problems. Re-design the
interface following a user-centered design process, except the last two steps – usability testing
and iterative test & redesign.
Give a short presentation during class on Oct 2, including the following:
1. Problem(s) with the existing design.
2. Important characteristics of the users of the product
3. A hierarchical task analysis
4. Your proposed design(s) (sketches are fine)
5. Explanations of why you think your design is better than the original one (using the
design basics and rules discussed in the class to justify your design)
Submit a technical report for the project on Oct. 7. The report should include the following
content.
1. Introduction
The introduction section describes the problems of the existing design which motivated you
to redesign it
2. Technical Approach
In the technical approach section, you need to mention that you redesigned the website or
control display (whatever you chose) following the user-centered design process.
2.1 Describe the user
The important characteristics of the users of the system
2.2 Hierarchical task analysis
2.3 Proposed design
Include your design sketch; Explanations of why you think your design is better than the
original one
3. Conclusion and Discussion
A short summary of what you have done in this project. A short discussion of what you have
learned in this project.
