Relationship between Literature and Society “Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become” ~C.S. Lewis As we all know Literature is a mirror of society which reflects societies issues in different forms like novel, prose, short story, plays or dramas. Literature can be meant as “any body of writings written in a particular country or a period or in the world in general” But literature definition is not restricted to these words. In fact literature is something where we or any writer say anything. Literature depicts the good and bad both sides of our society. There are many ways in which we can discuss literature and its relation with society. Society is a group of people with different mentality or different thinking. Human society can be characterized by the relationship between individuals who cultures, beliefs, values, norms and traditions etc. In literature there are many different writings of different writers from different perspectives. Though literature is the mirror of society and it depicts the reality of society.Written work and reading are two different things. Written work is real world and reading is a material act because reading depends upon the reader that how he perceive the work he read.So in this way influence of literature on society can be indirect means to say that when different people read the same work they see that work in their own way, in their own perspective. Literature influenced society very much. Good or bad things or issues of the society whatever they are, mainly discussed in literature writings to depicts the reality of the world. If we see the literary works there are many literary works which of our society. “Society finds its actual life in literature” 19th century is marked by a huge change as Britain changes from a rural area to an urban. Tess of Durbevills by Thomas hardy reflect the social changes of rural life. At the beginning of novel, life is not affected by Britain urbanization but when Tess father dies the whole family is forced to left their cottage as people are disposed. Employment increases as people search for new jobs. Tess is forced to work on farms as harvester People are replaced by machines and people are giving minor importance to work rather than people. The novel is a direct criticism on English
Victorian society of 19th century. The novel also aimed to explore sexual double standards of higher class. Another example Salt and saffron by Kamila shamsie is the best of Pakistani literature. In this novel we see what was the attitude of Aristocrats towards poor. Aristocrats always see people as inferior. This novel also shown the conditions of people after partition that people were apart. Some of them live in India and some of them in Pakistan. It also highlights the generation gap, the biggest gap of old generation and new generation. This novel truly portraits the real issues of society. Literature shows us about the history that we never know and Bapsi Sidhwa novel "The ice candy" is the example of history. Before partition Muslim and Sikhs were friends but in 1947 the time of partition they become enemies. At that times many Muslims were killed, this is the tough time of Muslim. If we see through literature we are able to see the history. “The history of literature is the history of the human mind” When there was a time of partition in Sub-continent people had to face a lot of problems. Their life was going to change. The old values were going to end. Like in The twilight in Delhi, the character or Mir Nihal Represents the old values and tradition which was going to end. Every writer depicts their culture and issues of their society in their literature for example Toni Morrison. In her Novel Beloved depict the conditions of the Africans how they suffered through out their life. The major character of this novel Sethi is the example of all hose African women who have to suffered such traumas. That they have to kill their or own child in order to save their child from slavery. Death was more easy for them than the life of slavery. Even in today's society, in order to save themselves people prefer death instead of slavery. Its true that death is more easy than a life of slavery. Similarly in her novel The color purple she portrayed the condition of a black woman. Even after slavery still they have to suffer in their whole life. Toni Morrison and other African writers depict their society's Issues which they had to face. In this novel Toni Morrison somehow highlight the issues of the women oppression. How women are oppressed by the male dominated society. In order to live a life women have to face many problems like in this novel a girl was raped by the male member of his own family but she have to keep her mouth close. As literature is the mirror of society. It also reflects the issues of modern man. Modern an always wants to be alone and feels alienated or isolated from society. Modern man believes in individuality. Many writers depicts the situation of modern man. For example rs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. In this novel she portrays the real condition of modern man, his isolation, his
