A Fairchild A-100 cockpit voice recorder, S/N 728, was brought to the CVR labroatory by Mexican authorities where the tape was removed and played back. It was found that the tape was partially erased. The transcript was prepared with some difficulty.
DETAILS OF EXAMINATION
A Fairchild A-100 cockpit voice recorder, S/N 728, from Western Airlines flight No. 2605, which crashed on landing at Mexico City, Mexico, was brought to the Audio Laboratory of the National Transportation Safety Board for transcription. The tape was removed from a relatively undamaged recorder. The dust cover and recorder fr4me were bent in and the input plug was jammed into the case. When the tape was played, it was found to have been partially bulk erased and contained a number of rather sharply defined interferring tones. This bulk erasure is being studied for future action. The original was taken to the FBI labs where it was put through a ADAPT filter and highly compressed. The fina, transcript was made from this tape. The transcript, while not entirely complete, represents the best that c011ld be reasonably expected from the tape.

The tape channel which was assigned to the flight engineer was found to be inoperative. Additionally, the rronitor headset plug on the CVR, which could be used for selectively monitoring the individual tape channels, was found to have been previou:sly tampered with in a manner to preclude a check of the operation of all channels of the recorder at the unit.
