Problem-Based Learning for Third Graders Solving Math Word Problems, Thesis of Management Accounting

A research topic related to education, which is problem-based learning for third graders solving math word problems. the reason for choosing this topic and the original data collection instrument used to collect quantitative data on the students' ability to use manipulatives to help answer mathematical word problems. The document also addresses ethical issues and the process to address them. The participants for this research study are a group of 16 third-grade students in a title one school system.

BFP2: Task 1
A. Education Related Research Topic
The education research topic is problem-based learning for third graders solving math
word problems. The reason I chose this topic for my research is because I’ve taught third
grade math for the last two years and I noticed that students tend to struggle with solving
word problems and using the correct operations. Also, in my school district there is a very
large population of ELL, and I understand that solving word problems in a language that they
are still learning can be very difficult for them. Since students will be required to solve word
problems throughout their educational careers it is important that they learn the strategies and
language to be able to solve word problems effectively.
B. Original Data Collection Instrument
1. Participants
The participants for this research study are a group of 16 third-grade students in a title
one school system. There are 10 girls and 6 boys in the class. Out of the 16 students 5 of
them are ELL.
2. Purpose for the Data Collection Instrument
The purpose of the data collection instrument is to collect quantitative data on the
students ability to use manipulatives to help answer mathematical word problems.

BFP2: Task 1 A. Education Related Research Topic The education research topic is problem-based learning for third graders solving math word problems. The reason I chose this topic for my research is because I’ve taught third grade math for the last two years and I noticed that students tend to struggle with solving word problems and using the correct operations. Also, in my school district there is a very large population of ELL, and I understand that solving word problems in a language that they are still learning can be very difficult for them. B. Original Data Collection Instrument

1. Participants The participants for this research study are a group of 16 third-grade students in a title one school system. There are 10 girls and 6 boys in the class. Out of the 16 students 5 of them are ELL. 2. Purpose for the Data Collection Instrument The purpose of the data collection instrument is to collect quantitative data on the students ability to use manipulatives to help answer mathematical word problems.

C. Ethical Issues and Process to Address Some ethical issues that could occur would be my ELL students getting confused on the correct phrases in the word problems to let them know which operation to use. To help them understand the correct terminology of the questions I will have an anchor chart broken down into the four operations and the phrases that go along with the operations so that they will know what to look for to determine how to solve the problems. If I were to administer this instrument, I would make sure the individuals understood, in advance, that participation would be voluntary, and the data collected from the individual responses would be to help determine problem-based learning in multiple step word problems. In my opinion it would be beneficial to ask the participants if they were interested in receiving an anonymous format of the survey results, as well as offering to have the choice of whether or not they want their responses to be included in the survey. Each student will receive a copy of the instrument. The students will have to write their name at the top of their paper. Then they will read through each problem and show their work by using the manipulatives given to find the correct answers for each step of the problems. The students will have to circle their final answers for each question.
