Research Methods on Social Work
Research methodology in social work is used to acquire knowledge and to construct a grounded
level of understanding about a particular issue or concept. Research is used as an essential pillar
for evidence-based practice, which is essential for effective delivery of social care. In this way,
research helps to determine what works in social work, why it works, and how it works. As
research is used to inform and improve social care services, it is important to recognize the various
research methods that are available within the profession.
Qualitative research is used to gain an in-depth understanding of a certain phenomena or
situation. This type of research generally involves interviews, focus groups, case studies, narrative
analysis, and physiological observations. Much research in the social work profession has employed
qualitative methodology due to its flexibility and ability to uncover individual experiences and
perceptions. For example, a case study could be used to understand how a particular family deals
with a certain problem or how an older adult copes with loneliness.
Quantitative research is used to measure and compare the general characteristics or factors
associated with a specified issue. This type of research involves surveys, experiments, field tests,
and simulations. It is often used to measure operating costs, patient outcomes, and service quality
in order to develop policies and programs to improve social care services. Quantitative research
usually relies on deductive reasoning and commonly employs descriptive and inferential statistics
to analyze data. For example, a survey could be used to assess the quality of life of young people in
foster care or to examine the effectiveness of a certain service intervention.
Evaluative research is used to assess the utility, relevance, efficiency, and value of different
interventions and programs. This type of research includes a range of approaches, such as pilot
projects, longitudinal and cross-sectional studies, cost-benefit analysis, and systematic reviews.
Evaluation is particularly relevant to social work practitioners who use evidence-based practice in
order to inform and improve services. For instance, a longitudinal study could be used to compare
the outcomes of two different programs designed to help low-income children.
Overall, research methods in social work are essential for evidence-based practice and the
successful delivery of social care. Through qualitative, quantitative, and evaluative research,
practitioners can identify the problems and needs of their client populations and develop data-
driven solutions to compete with the existing or emerging challenges. Doing so can help create
meaningful change for individuals and their communities.

The goals are often for the client to feel more capable and empowered in finding solutions to their problems and engaging with their community. Social case workers utilize a variety of interventions such as assessment, planning, problem solving, advocacy, crisis intervention, resource facilitation, and education in order to help the client achieve success in managing their own lives. Social group work is a helping process where people come together in a group setting to discuss and understand the power of human relationships, and to work through difficult social issues. Group work focuses on effective communication and problem solving techniques such as active listening, respect for different perspectives, building trust, managing conflict and celebrating diversity. Group members develop shared responsibility and leadership skills while working together towards common goals; this encourages cooperation and relationship-building within the group. Social group work can be beneficial in various contexts including counseling, corrections, education, recreation activities, mental health treatment plans and more. Examples of social action could be joining your local Amnesty International group or attending a protest against police brutality – basically anything that involves taking direct action rather than just talking about issues or reading about them online. The internet, especially sites like Facebook and Twitter, has made organizing social action events easier than ever before – so if you want to get involved in making a difference in the world, it’s never been easier!
