RESONANCE STRUCTURES & FORMAL CHARGES
Exit Ticket 21
1. Methyl isocyanate (H3CNCO) is a toxic compound used in production of many pesticides.
Draw the Lewis structure for this compound, including any resonance structures.
(Note: skeletal arrangement is in order written)
2. Oxidation of the cyanide ion produces the stable cyanate ion (OCN). The fulminate ion
(CNO), on the other hand, is very unstable. Write Lewis structures for these ions and
assign formal charges to each atom. (Both skeletal arrangements are as written)
a) Are these ions resonance structures of one another? Explain.
b) Give an explanation for why the fulminate ion is so unstable.

  2. Oxidation of the cyanide ion produces the stable cyanate ion (OCN–). The fulminate ion (CNO–), on the other hand, is very unstable. Write Lewis structures for these ions and assign formal charges to each atom. (Both skeletal arrangements are as written) a) Are these ions resonance structures of one another? Explain. b) Give an explanation for why the fulminate ion is so unstable.
  1. Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) has 3 possible resonance structures. Draw all resonance structures for this molecule and assign formal charges to each atom. (The two nitrogens are attached to each other). a) Which of these resonance structures would be expected to contribute to the resonance hybrid the least? Explain your reasoning. b) Use the table of bond length values on Profpaz to estimate the N–N bond length and the N–O bond length for this molecule. Clearly explain how you arrived at your answers.
  2. Use the table of bond energies in your textbook to answer the following questions: a) Which molecule has stronger bonds: CO or N 2? List the bond energy value for each. b) Based on bond energy values determined in (a), which do you expect to be more reactive: CO or N 2? c) CO is found to be considerably more reactive than N 2. Give a possible explanation for this observation.
