Revision Reflection
I choose to revise my rhetorical analysis assignment. This assignment was the toughest
assignment we had to do for this class in my own personal opinion. This idea of this assignment
was to find a public service announcement on you tube to analyze, explain how some of the
criteria that we discussed in class was represented in that video and to clarify the significance to
the overall meaning of the PSA. The first public service announcement I chose was called
“Cooties.” I chose this video because it caught my attention on you tube by using children to
express an important message to viewers. It turns out that the “Cooties” PSA had a much deeper
meaning to it that I just could not grasp. After I turned it in, I realized that I just had to choose a
PSA that I understood and look at the bigger picture of it.
My new PSA was called “That’s So Gay-Wanda Sykes.” I chose this PSA for my
assignment because it had a clear message to it and I could see the criteria when watching it that
we discussed in class. Therefore I re-wrote my entire rhetorical analysis but I do not regret doing
so because I felt it was necessary not only for my grade but for an opportunity to really
understand what was supposed to be expected for this assignment. I watched the PSA video
several times first to really get a grasp of what was happening in it. I then picked apart the video
to find the things that really made the PSA strong and effective. The first thing I noticed when
watching the PSA is that it made me laugh. In terms, I realized that humor was a main
component to discuss. When you think about it, you would rather see a PSA that is funny rather
than serious because I personally would rather laugh than to feel kind of awkward. When seeing
something that is even a little more serious, tends to make you tense up and feel as if you do not

Samantha Nye ENG 207 Revision Reflection I choose to revise my rhetorical analysis assignment. This assignment was the toughest assignment we had to do for this class in my own personal opinion. This idea of this assignment was to find a public service announcement on you tube to analyze, explain how some of the criteria that we discussed in class was represented in that video and to clarify the significance to the overall meaning of the PSA. The first public service announcement I chose was called “Cooties.” I chose this video because it caught my attention on you tube by using children to express an important message to viewers. It turns out that the “Cooties” PSA had a much deeper meaning to it that I just could not grasp. After I turned it in, I realized that I just had to choose a PSA that I understood and look at the bigger picture of it. My new PSA was called “That’s So Gay-Wanda Sykes.” I chose this PSA for my assignment because it had a clear message to it and I could see the criteria when watching it that we discussed in class. Therefore I re-wrote my entire rhetorical analysis but I do not regret doing so because I felt it was necessary not only for my grade but for an opportunity to really understand what was supposed to be expected for this assignment. I watched the PSA video several times first to really get a grasp of what was happening in it. I then picked apart the video to find the things that really made the PSA strong and effective. The first thing I noticed when watching the PSA is that it made me laugh. In terms, I realized that humor was a main component to discuss. When you think about it, you would rather see a PSA that is funny rather than serious because I personally would rather laugh than to feel kind of awkward. When seeing something that is even a little more serious, tends to make you tense up and feel as if you do not

know what to say or how to act afterwards. When laughing about something makes you feel more comfortable and relaxed about the situation. The next thing I noticed was that this PSA shows the importance of credibility. The actress that they chose to play a role in this PSA was a woman named Wanda Sykes. She is an adult, a stand up comedian and a lesbian. This shows credibility because since she is an adult, people are more prone to watch the PSA and pay attention to what she is saying. Better yet, she is a comedian and since this PSA is meant to be funny, a comedian would be the best way to present a message of humor. Lastly, she is a lesbian who shows she has the right to stand up and speak her feelings to the teenage boys because she felt offended on a more personal level. With all three of these characteristics in an actress, would show that it is a reliable message to be heard. Lastly, I looked at the overall reliable message that is sent to keep people from saying the phrase, “that’s so gay.” The purpose of this PSA is that people are saying this phrase and it is becoming a trend that needs to be prevented because it is offending others around those who say it. Wanda Sykes does a good job at just simply standing up to these teenage boys after she hears it and telling them it is not right to say these types of things. She takes an object that is in front of her and compares the situation to the boys by making a comment that would hurt their feelings in some way so they know how it feels. I feel that this message is an issue that needs to be addressed but a not so serious matter so it is good that it was presented by humor. I feel that the changes I made my essay a lot stronger not only because I found a PSA that I really enjoyed watching but because I related it to the class criteria and understood what to discuss for my assignment. I feel I had a good grasp of knowledge I could talk about from what I
