  • Formerly known as “ Escuela Pia ” w/c is financed by charities given by wealthy Spaniards and Filipinos.
  • A secondary school that offered rigorous courses almost equivalent to AUP.
  • It was being run by the Jesuit Order.
  • Rizal became a ‘ first rate ” student and graduated “ Sobresaliente ”.
  • He was remembered as an original thinker, creative scholar, and a natural leader.
  • He mastered the Spanish language.

The Order of Preachers ( Ordo fratrum Praedicatorum ), after 15th century more commonly known as the Dominican Order, created by Saint Dominic in the early 13th century in France. A Dominican friar is a member of one of the mendicant orders. The word friar is etymologically related to "brother" in Latin.

  2. Medicine (1878) After 5 years in the University of Santo Tomas, Rizal quit and continued his medical education and philosophy abroad.

  • UST helped Rizal developed his patriotic sentiment.
  • Rizal became aware of the enlightenment and intrigued by philosophers
  • UST intensified Rizal’s interest in literature, science and philosophy.
  • UST professors were unfair, hostile and unjust to the Filipino students.
