This report provides a comprehensive analysis of rockwell hardness testing, a widely used method for determining the resistance of materials to indentation. It delves into the theory behind hardness, the procedure for conducting rockwell hardness tests, and the analysis of results. The report also includes a comparison of the hardness properties of steel and brass, highlighting their distinct characteristics and applications.

Hardness of a material is generally defined as Resistance to the permanent indentation under a load. Hardness is the property of the material by which it resists scratch or indentation. It is the most important property, as the material is subjected to friction and scratch. When a material is required to be used under direct static or dynamic loads, only indentation hardness test will be useful to find out resistance to indentation. This test is an indentation test used for smaller specimens and harder materials. Figure 1 Labled Rockwell tester Figure 2 The indentation The choice of indenter is dependent upon the characteristics of the test material. The Rockwell Hardness Test applies larger minor and major load values than the Superficial Rockwell, yet both tests offer three different major load options.

The Rockwell Hardness Test machine presses a tiny conical diamond piece into a test specimen and measures the resulting indentation depth as a gage of the specimen hardness. The test results can be used to determine the suitability of a material for application depending on required hardness. The obtained results from research prove that steel is harder than brass, but there is an experimental error within the readings taken in the lab since there is a percentage error value, it can be assumed that it might be disruption from experimental errors occur during the experiment. To minimize the error, the experimental procedure may be repeated for several times, within 3 to 4 times to get several values. Besides, let the machine in stable condition in few seconds before start to record the data.
