Numbers 11– Examples: 11 = XI 12 = XII 13 = XIII 14 = XIV 15 = XV Roman numerals combine symbols.

Tens in Roman Numerals 10 = X 20 = XX 30 = XXX 40 = XL 50 = L 60 = LX 70 = LXX 80 = LXXX 90 = XC 100 = C

Thousands 1000 = M 2000 = MM 3000 = MMM Roman numerals usually stop at 3999, but larger numbers use bars above numbers.

Numbers Above 1000 When a line is placed above a Roman numeral, it means multiply by 1,000. Example: V̅ = 5, X̅ = 10, L̅ = 50, C̅ = 100, D̅ = 500, M̅ = 1,000,

Convert to Roman numeral:

20 = XX

5 = V

Answer = XXV

Subtraction Rule When a smaller numeral comes before a larger one, we subtract. Examples: IV = 4 IX = 9 XL = 40 XC = 90
