Numbers Above 1000 When a line is placed above a Roman numeral, it means multiply by 1,000. Example: V̅ = 5, X̅ = 10, L̅ = 50, C̅ = 100, D̅ = 500, M̅ = 1,000,
Subtraction Rule When a smaller numeral comes before a larger one, we subtract. Examples: IV = 4 IX = 9 XL = 40 XC = 90
