Sample Autobiographical Statement # Writing an autobiographical statement about myself is turning out to be more challenging than I expected. You’ve asked me to write something that helps you understand a bit about me, so let me share with you this story. When my husband proposed to me [now, many moon ago], he gave me two options. First, he said that he would buy me a beautiful engagement ring of my choice! Or, he would take the two of us on a trip of my choosing. I didn’t even need to think about my response, and I chose the latter! He ended up taking us on a safari trip in Africa for 18 days. It was a life‐altering experience for the both of us, but for me personally, it changed the course of my work‐life. In Africa, I had the opportunity to witness such majestic beauty of landscapes and wildlife so expansive and different than anything I had ever seen. And I met people who were so warm, generous and kind, though more impoverished than anyone I had ever before encountered. Upon returning to the States, I decided I wanted to be more involved in really helping those in need, and decided pursue a career that was hands on in helping. At the time, I was a trained finance‐person with a good paying job. I ended up returning to school part, then full‐time and getting a degree in social work. I did give up a lot in earning potential, though I can honestly say, I’ve never regretted my decision. I’ve put my new degree to good use at two non‐profits whereby I worked with people directly and have been able to change their futures for the better. My finance background has also come in handy, as I’ve volunteered to work with heads of families on budgeting and making the most out of few assets. It’s been incredibly rewarding, and I often thank my husband for his unique and life‐changing gift. And…I should share that whenever I look at my simple wedding band, I’m reminded of our beautiful African safari, and the memories of that extraordinary trip float back through my mind so often; it’s been a gift that has kept on giving. Sample Autobiographical Statement # “Never allow money to be your motivator.” In my life and in my career, I have always tried to follow this principle learned at an early age. Experience and enthusiasm for the ‘game’ has always been my drivers, and I put this to good use as a pharmacist. I spent the first 10 years of my career gathering and developing unique skills in the male‐dominated pharmacy industry in business development, marketing and community outreach. This experience eventually allowed me to secure positons as Operations Manager, Conversion Manager, District Manager and Regional Recruiter in the highly competitive chain‐ pharmacy world. I gained considerable knowledge in those positions, and learned a lot about working with all kinds of people – many of whom were much smarter than me. On the home‐front, I was able to accomplish many personal goals because I have an incredibly supportive husband and family. Many jobs put me on the road for long hours or overnight, and my husband was there to get the kids off to school, make dinner and keep things going at home. My two teen twins learned at an early age to make their beds, school lunches, and to help around the house. And, my parents and in‐laws were very available if anyone needed a ride after school – often on short notice.

With the help of my family, four years ago, as a family we embarked on a new venture close to our hearts. My grandfather owned a bakery for decades, and my husband’s grandfather owned a restaurant for a long time, so we combined this collective knowledge to open and grow a café catering to farm‐to‐ table offerings. We bake all of our bakery items and roast all meats in‐house, and even make our own dressings. We’ve learned to ship locally and long distance, while remaining focused on offering good food at good prices right in our community. It’s really a family affair, with my husband and I running the main show while my dad works weekends making all batters and frostings from scratch, as he did with his dad. My mom does the books, and my children work around their school and activity schedules. I often say that I gave up a well‐paying profession to sell coffee. But, the rewards of building and owning your own business, working together as a family and sharing the experiences together are priceless. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Sample Autobiographical Statement # Growing up, we were privileged to share our home with our grandparents who had come to America to escape the dangerous conditions in their home country of Lebanon. As far back as I can recall, my grandmother schooled my siblings and me on the importance of loving and taking care of each other. She’d take our hands, join them together^ and^ say,^ “This^ is^ your^ brother.^ This^ is^ your^ sister.^ Love^ one another.” And she lived her beliefs, even when it meant going with less to help someone in need. At the Land Trust, through a dedicated and caring staff at every building, we are able to help people, who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience what it is to have a home, not just a place to live. An experience of family that they may never have had or once did, but lost to addiction, mental illness, and other forms of chronic pain. When we purchased Windsor House in 2003, conditions in the building were intolerable: used needles and roaches were everywhere, filth was smeared on walls and floors, drug dealing was out in the open. Overdoses were commonplace, despite our pleas for the clients to get help. A young woman overdosed and died in my arms while we waited for the ambulance. Windsor House had been like this for many years. Of all the building we own, Windsor House is my favorite because of what it was and what it now is: one of the most sought after places to room in Lawrence because of the people who care that are part of the place. Lawrence is a city with a long history of welcoming immigrants like my grandma. I am grateful and fortunate to be here, among friends and neighbors, doing work that honors my grandma and that I know would make her proud.
