(iii) The real play of the otter is lying on his back and juggling with small objects between his paws. Mijbil would roll two or more marbles up and down on his wide, fat belly. He never dropped one to the floor. (iv) The poem gives a strong message about respecting the laws of nature and not to cage the birds or animals as they, just like human beings, too have the desire to be set free. They are best when kept in their natural habitats. (v) The poem ‘The Trees’ presents a conflict between Man and Nature. Man has been abusing and misusing nature for his own selfish needs. Ironically, people also then keep plants and trees inside their homes. In the poem, the poet describes a scene where the trees that are inside homes are now moving out into the forests where they belong. This represents nature’s retaliation to its mistreatment at the hand of mankind.

9. (i) Dr. Herriot soon realized that the only way to ensure

Tricki’s recovery was to take him out of Mrs. Pumphrey’s house. On learning that Tricki had to be hospitalized for about a fortnight, Mrs. Pumphrey almost passed out.

was also a good planner. She sacri-ficed a lot of things in order to achieve her dream. For example, she curbed the temptation to buy sweets and riding the merry-go- round in the fair so that she could save money for the bus fare. Sacrificing all these things at such a tender age is very difficult for a child. She behaved confidently in the bus too and did not get bobbed down in the presence of the elders. When the bus reached the town. Valli did not succumb to the temptation of going out to explore the town or having a drink. The Editor, The Hindu, New Delhi Subject: Critical condition of water park Sir, Through the columns of your reputed newspaper, I would like to share my sad experience with one and all that I had during my recent visit to the Water Park. We visited the place as a part of our school excursion but were gravely shocked to see its state. The water in the park was dirty and a stale smell was emanating from it. This can result in many water-borne diseases. It was due to the degrading condition of the park that the number of the visitors was little. I want to make the concerned authorities aware of the fact that they must ensure the regular cleaning of water at proper intervals. Draining and repletion with freshwater should be done regularly. This place can become a popular holiday spot if proper steps are taken to ameliorate its condition. Thanking you, Yours sincerely, Neeta

5.A. Music Preferences

A survey was conducted in which 75 residents of a colony were asked about their preference in different kinds of music. The survey was done in three different age groups. The data collected showed that the teenagers had more interest in Western music than ghazals. Almost 40 teenagers were interested in listening to Western music. However only 20 adults and 15 senior citizens showed interest in it. The senior citizens preferred classical music followed by bhaj Only 25 senior citizens were interested in listening to ghazals. Most of the adults also preferred listening to ghazals. They all had an average interest in classical music, Western music or bhaj Their number remained static in both classical and bhajans as only 25 adults preferred to listen to bhajans and classical music. To conclude, we can say that all the three age groups had different preferences in music. OR

B. Means of Communication Popular among Students

A survey was conducted to find the preferred means of communications among students. According to the results, there is not a very big gap between first and second preferences which are the use of telephones and text messages with 27% and 23%. As they are the easiest and take less time for conveying one’s messages and getting an instant reply makes it handy even in the professional world for having a conversation. The next in line with the same odds are Email used by only 17% of students and Instant Messenger used by a meagre 16% as they are mainly used for formal conversations. These are followed by the two least favorite means of communication or are outdated means of communication, but are still in user; they are letters which are used by only 7% and fax which is used by 10% of students.

9. (i) It is correct to say that Anil had forgiven Hari Singh. It

was evident because Anil handed over to Hari a fifty rupee note as soon as Hari woke up. (iii) At the London store, Griffin was able to give himself the pleasure of clothing and feeding himself without thinking about paying for the same. This is because the stores had closed down. He broke open boxes and wrappers and fitted himself out with warm clothes.

10. (i) The play ‘The Proposal’ teaches us how anger and

arguments can easily ruin a relationship. Thus, to maintain a good relationship, it is important to have a control over one's anger. Having arguments over unimportant or trivial issues is extremely harmful and a waste of time. If someone commits a mistake, one should be ready to forgive and forget rather than being angry and arguing with the person endlessly. In today's time, people try to find only the positive things in others and do not easily accept their negative aspects. Hence is becoming extremely difficult to maintain a good and cordial relationship with others. OR (ii) In the poem, the trees are represented as a metaphor for human beings. The poet says, the way humans want freedom, nature too wants to be free from the control of hum The trees are brought to the artificial glass houses but the natural habitat for them is the forest. The trees are desperate to come out of their artificial barriers. After a long and hard struggle, the trees are marching towards the forest, which is their natural habitat.

11. (i) It is fairly impossible that Ausable had worked out his

plan on the spot. In fact, it seems that Ausable using his quick thinking took advantage of the situation in order to build up a story of a balcony and police knocking at the door. Another aspect is that Ausable could have built up his plan in detail much in advance. He knew that he was in possession of confidential documents that someone, and would even try to get hold of them. Ausable might have surveyed the room and built up a story in advance and would have also told the waiter to knock loudly

and continuously in case he did not open the door in one go. OR (ii) Success is the fruit of failure. It never comes straight but through failure. This can be seen in the life of Richard Ebright. Although he earned top grades in school, on everyday things he was just like every other kid. He faced many failures in his life, but every failure strengthened his will to succeed. When he was in seventh grade, he participated in County Science Fair with his slides of frog tissues. But he could not win a prize. This made him determined to win the prize and in his eighth grade, he again participated in the science fair with the experiment of viral disease in monarch caterpillars and won the prize. The very next year, he participated with his experiment of whether viceroy butterflies copy the monarch butterflies in order to save their life from the birds and this project won Ebright, third prize in overall County Science Fair. His experiment regarding gold spots of monarch that the spots produced hormones necessary for the full development of butterflies won third prize in International Science and Engineering Fair. Next year, his advanced experiments on the monarch pupa won him first place at the International Science Fair. Thus, for Richard Ebright, we can say that success is failure turned inside out.

B. Unhygienic Water Parks

A visit to the water park clearly showed the unclean and polluted water which has resulted in a decrease in the number of visitors. The graph shows a steady decline in the number of visitors to the water park. Almost 5700 tourists visited the park in 2004. The number reduced to 5000 in the year 2005 and approximately 4500 in 2006. However the decline did not stop here. The number showed a fall in the later years also when it reached 3000 in 2008. The year 2007 also did not show a positive rise in the number of visitors

in the park. This indicates that the unclean water and foul odour is taking its toll on the number of visitors which is declining with each passing year. A sharp dip is seen in the year from 2004 to 2009. Overall, some concrete steps must be taken in order to increase the number of visitors in the water park.

understanding. She was her son's friend and companion. She filled the vacuum in Ebright's life in his father's absence. She invested time and energy in his upbringing which made him see heights of success. On the other hand Bholi's parents were uncaring, indifferent, biased, and insensitive and had a patriarchal mindset. They had a traditional outlook and did not believe in the education of girls, were totally indifferent to Bholi and her needs. They neglected her and did not even bother to groom her. They sent her school not to educate her but to save their own face. Despite their prosperity, they left Bholi to her own misery. Worst was when they decided to marry her off to Bishamber. The contribution and companionship of parents cannot be denied. Love, care, and guidance from parents make a difference, sculpt children and shape their future. OR (ii) It is true that no one is born a thief and it is the circumstances that make a person take that path.
