Sampling methods in Psychology

  • Learning Objectives:
    • To be able to describe and identify the 3 sampling methods used in psychological research
    • To be able to evaluate the usefulness of each sampling method
  • There are 4 ways in which psychologists select their participants.
  • These are:
    • Self-selecting (also called volunteer)
    • Opportunity
    • Random
    • Please see page 23 of your research methods booklet.

Random Sampling

  • Psychologists can randomly sample participants. In this way, everyone has an equal chance of being selected - this could be done by names in a hat or by computer
  • True random sampling is very rare - imagine selecting from a population of 6 billion!

Opportunity sampling

  • Psychologists can select people who happen to be around when the experiment is taking place.
  • This is called opportunity sampling.
  • It is often used in British Universities, students take part in the department’s research.

Strengths and Weaknesses of

Opportunity Sampling

  • Opportunity sampling

is good because it is

quick and convenient.

  • It is very economical

way of sampling, it

can be cheap

  • This sampling method

is bad because the

researcher may choose

participants who are

helpful - this creates

bias.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Self-

Selecting sampling

  • Self-selecting sampling is good because it is very easy and convenient to the researcher.
  • The research can advertise (using newspaper adverts/posters) and wait for the participant to respond. - Self-selecting has a large downfall in that it only uses volunteers. People who choose to take part in an experiment often have a reason. - For example, students are encouraged to take part in research for course credit!
