Assume that the op-amps mentioned in these questions are in the standard 8-pin package (Pin 6 = Output , Pin 2 = Inverting terminal , Pin 3 = Non-inverting terminal) and are using standard power supply voltages of +15V and -15V.

1hp = 746W.

  1. Fill in the blanks : An ideal op-amp has input resistance. An ideal op-amp has open-loop gain. An ideal op-amp has current flowing into the inverting and non-inverting terminals. [ 3 marks ]
  2. Design an inverting amplifier circuit with a gain of -7. If Vin = 1.5V then what are the voltages on pins 2,3 and 6 of the op-amp? What is the output voltage if Vin = 5V? Modify the circuit so that the gain = -1/7 and repeat the question. [ 8 marks ]
  3. Design a difference amplifier which will subtract 2 input voltages and multiply the difference by 4. [ 8 marks ]
  4. Design a low-pass filter with a DC gain of 25dB and a cut-off frequency of 3kHz. What is the gain at 30Hz , 3kHz and 300kHz? [ 8 marks ]
  5. Design a non-inverting Schmitt trigger with VTU = 3V , VTL = -3V. Draw the transfer function of the circuit for Vin = -5V to +5V. [ 8 marks ]
  6. By combining op-amp circuits and taking polarity reversal into account , design a circuit to implement the following mathematical function : [ 15 marks ]

Vin 1 Vin 2 Vin Vin Vout

  1. Draw a star-connected 3-phase system. Clearly identify the line voltage , phase voltage , line current and phase current. [5 marks ]
  2. Three similar coils each having a resistance of 5 and an inductance of 16mH are connected in (a) star (b) delta to a three-phase 50Hz, 380V supply. Calculate in each case the line current and total power absorbed. [15 marks]
