Scientific Poster Assignment
Create a poster (height=28โ€, width=56โ€) using PowerPoint that summarizes your
senior thesis research project. The poster should include sections that follow the
outline of your thesis: It should include (i) an Introduction/Motivation for your
project (including useful illustrations), (ii) a brief description of the techniques and
procedures used in your research project (including interesting and informative
pictures), (iii) any relevant results generated during the course of your project
(including great data and/or simulations/calculations), (iv) a summary section,
which would include possible future directions for your project, and (v) an
acknowledgment section. Next week, Celia and I will provide some tips for
generating effective scientific posters, but following are a few pointers to keep in
mind for this assignment: (i) as in the case of a scientific oral presentation, the
text on the poster should not be too dense; (ii) the font size should be no less
than about 24 point; and (iii) you should make good use of eye-catching, but
informative, figures. Due dates are as follows:
First draft to me in electronic form, Friday Oct. 24
Second draft to me in electronic form, Thursday, Oct. 30
Between those two dates, Prof. Cooper will arrange to meet with each of
you to go over your posters.
Practice poster session in class, Friday, Oct. 31
Printing of final posters, Monday, Nov. 3.
Presentation to a distinguished panel of judges (Dave Hertzog and Al
Nathan) on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 6, at 5 PM, just after the weekly
colloquium. We will provide the pizza and drinks!
