List of Scientists: Electricity & Magnetism André-Marie Ampére Ampere's Law: Mathematically relates the magnetic field around a closed loop to the electric current passing through it. Electrodynamics: Founded the science of electrodynamics, describing the forces between current-carrying wires. The Solenoid: Invented the helical coil (solenoid) to concentrate magnetic fields. The Ampere (Unit): The unit of electric current is named in his honor. Alessandro Volta The Voltaic Pile: Invented the first chemical battery, providing the first source of continuous, steady current. Voltaic Cell: Discovered that two different metals separated by an electrolyte produce a potential difference. The Volt (Unit): The unit of electromotive force (EMF) is named after him. Methane: Discovered and isolated methane gas separately from his electrical work. Benjamin Franklin Conservation of Charge: Discovered that electricity is not created or destroyed, but merely transferred (positive and negative charge). Lightning Rod: Invented the lightning rod based on his discovery that lightning is electrical in nature. The Franklin Bell: Invented a device to detect an approaching lightning storm. Point Discharge: Discovered that pointed conductors are more effective at discharging electricity than blunt ones.
