Fundamentals of Remote Sensing

Remote sensing involves energy emission, atmospheric interaction, surface interaction, and sensor detection.

Passive sensors rely on the Sun; active sensors generate their own energy.

Atmospheric effects include Rayleigh scattering, Mie scattering, and absorption by gases.

Electromagnetic Spectrum

Visible bands: Blue, Green, Red

Near Infrared (NIR): Vegetation health

Shortwave Infrared (SWIR): Moisture, burn scars

Thermal Infrared: Temperature

Indices & Formulas

NDVI = (NIR โ€“ Red) / (NIR + Red)

NDWI = (Green โ€“ NIR) / (Green + NIR)

NDBI = (SWIR โ€“ NIR) / (SWIR + NIR)

Allowed Satellites (Division B โ€“ Official)

Landsat 8/9 โ€“ 30 m resolution, sun-synchronous, NDVI applications

Sentinel-2 โ€“ 10โ€“60 m resolution, red-edge bands

MODIS โ€“ 250 m to 1 km, global patterns

GOES โ€“ Geostationary, weather monitoring

Quick Reference Sheets

Vegetation: Bright red (false color), high NDVI

Water: Dark, low NDVI

Urban: Grid patterns

Agriculture: Rectangular fields
