CONTENTS INTRODUCTION CHALLENGES WITH SMART SPEAKING DEVICES TIPS TO SECURE COMMAND OR MESSAGE SEND TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION WAYS TO SECURE YOUR GOOGLE HOME DEVICES CONCLUSION REFERENCES

Challenges with Google Home and Alexa Smart speakers are always listening (to catch the wake up word ) Unwanted triggering of commands (through TV or radios) Data stored in the cloud ( Vulnerable to unauthorized access) Adversarial attacks

(malicious actor sending false commands)

**Voice assistants can be commanded from outside your

home, even by others. Attackers can even use ultrasound

frequencies to avoid human detection

Tips to secure ‘command’ or ‘message send’

 For Google Home you can disable “personal results” from showing up.
 Erase sensitive recordings from time to time
 Change the wake word.
 If you are not using the voice assistant, mute it (according to your
convenience)
 Protect the service account linked to the device with a strong password and
2FA where possible.
 Use a WPA2 encrypted Wi-Fi network and not an open hotspot at home.
 Create a guest Wi-Fi network for guests and unsecure IoT devices.
 Lock the voice assistant down to your personal voice pattern, when
available.
 Don’t use the voice assistant to remember private information such as
passwords or credit card numbers.
 Pay attention to notification emails, especially ones about new orders for
goods or services.
 Consider enabling a beep sound at the beginning and end of command
recognition.
 Do not turn off automatic update functions on the device.

TWO WAY AUTHENTICATION Fingerprint recognition

(Fingerprint Scanner on device)

Facial recognition (Authorized face can give command ) Security tokens

( one-time passwords that a user may

receive via SMS )

Voice recognition

(Only registered voice can give commands)

Ways to Secure Your Google Home Device Enable voice match Limit external devices Use two-factor authentication

Mute Google Home

Discard old voice recordings
