PROJECT PROPOSAL: SMART TRAFFIC DETECTION SYSTEM

SUPERVISOR : MR K.CHILUMANI

1.1 INTRODUCTION

In this modern world it is hard to find an object or place that doesn’t evolve around a computer system.Technology has become a thing that is part of people’s lives. The Zimbabwe Motor Vehicle Sales: Passenger Vehicles was reported at 1,618.000 Unit in Dec 2019 ,which shows that there is high traffic rate in Zimbabwe and vehicle detection through police patrols and all the manual system like roadblocks are less efficient in vehicle detection. The Smart Traffic Detection System is a system that detects and classifies vehicles on tollgates using RFID and image processing. The Smart Traffic Detection System also helps in traffic safety and the country’s safety as it can be used in the tracking of vehicles reducing theft cases. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has attracted much attention due to its variety of applications in different fields e.g. military, sports, security, airline, inventory control, object tracking etc. Comparing to other tracking and detecting system such as barcode or smart card systems, RFID is faster and efficient. A Smart detection system that uses RFID is needed on tollgates to make vehicle identification easier In this chapter will unveil all the preliminary actions, covering changes applied in coming out with a new proposed electronic system justifiably, it details the methods and Instruments that will be used to develop the system and gather data, stating current system problems, background study of the organization, its vision and mission as well as the objectives and aim of the proposed system. 1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT The purpose of this project is to develop an electronic system that helps the Tollgates be able to perform vehicle identification. Different countries use different processes for identification of vehicle and for traffic control, targeted visitors investigation, checking against the law activities, security control , traffic law and enforcements agencies .Most of these processes are manual and tedious .In Zimbabwe we use a manual process for vehicle detection which has proved to be less effective considering the crime rate increase in car hijacking and traffic violation. With a system that can perform vehicle detection and classification, the authentication, verification and security of vehicles becomes easy to implement.

1.5 OBJECTIVES

i. To detect vehicle number plates using RFID tags ii. To classify the vehicle type iii. Send an actuation signal to the controller iv. To produce a report 1.6 METHODS AND INSTRUMENTS To design and develop the proposed system the following data methodologies will be gathered: 1.6.1 DATA COLLECTION METHODS i. Direct Observations The use of sight to determine how existing systems operate is referred to as observation. It also requires reading from existing systems' paperwork. This approach is useful because it provides the researcher with a good image of how things work; nevertheless, the researcher must be cautious not to distort or misinterpret factual information. (Robson et al., 2016).In this process will mainly use a survilliance camera. ii. Academic Research Academic study includes the researcher reading previously published books, articles, and internet publications and enlisting the aid of academics (Robson et al., 2016). The researcher would first classify all necessary sources of knowledge, then go through the written material and deduce evidence. In this process will use article ,journals and rule books from VID, Traffic Safety Council and Police. 1.6.2 INSTRUMENTS Tools that will be used to develop the proposed system: i. MySQL – necessary to convey or a means to approach and manipulating databases as a standard language.

ii. Web Server- internet information services necessary to execute all business processes in the enterprise. iii. VISUAL STUDIO 2019 iv. Surveillance Camera v. RFID vi. PYCHAM -Libraries: (OpenCV, Pillow, NumPy, Keras) 1.7 JUSTIFICATION Use of fast technologies make job activities easier to perform ,the system identifies the number plate, the system uses RFID tag to get the number plates of the vehicles .In this system the tag is detected by the RFID reader and the data is matched with the database provided at every tollgate to classify the vehicle type. There is need for a secure system on tollgates to efficiently be able to detect vehicles for a various number of benefits like vehicle tracking ,toll collection ,vehicle verification ,vehicle classification and authentication processes (It can see whether the user id is authorised to proceed or not). A new smart system will be installed at tollgates for vehicle detection. EXPECTED RESULTS What you should expect is a system that identifies vehicles and produces a report that shows the number plates and vehicle classification of all vehicles that would have passed through the tollgate. 1.8 CONCLUSION To this end the chapter clearly highlighted all the problems encountered by the current system and their proposed solutions set in line to curb those challenges. Methods and instruments for data gathering and developing tools where listed respectively in order to help in the designing and developing of the proposed system as well as crafting the intended work plan of how the project will go about.
