Iron-Iron Carbide Equilibrium Diagram
^ Austenite
:^ It is solid solution of carbon
dissolved in
γ^ (f.c.c.) iron. Normally it is not
stable at room temperature. Maximumsolubility of carbon is 2 % at 2065 degree F. Itsaverage properties are : tensile strength, 150000psi: elongation, 10 % in 2 in: hardness,Rockwell C 40 and toughness, high.
^ Ferrite:
It is a solid solution of a small amount of carbon in
α^ (b.c.c.) iron. The maximum
solubility of C is 0.025 % at 1333 degree F. Atroom temperature the maximum solubility of Cis 0.008 %. Ferrite is the softest structure ofsteel. Its average properties are: tensilestrength, 40000 psi: elongation, 40 % in 2 in:hardness, less than Rockwell C 0.
^ Pearlite:
It is a eutectoid mixture formed at
1333 degree F on very slow cooling. It contains0.8 % C and is a mixture of ferrite andcementite. Its average properties are: tensilestrength, 120000 psi: elongation, 20 % in 2 in:hardness, Rockwell C 20.
