The process of collecting, transporting, processing, recycling, and disposing of waste materials in a way that reduces harm to human health and the environment. HAZARDOUS WASTE Waste that poses a substantial danger to human health or the environment because it is toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive.
1. LANDFILL DISPOSAL Dumping waste in a designated area (sanitary landfill) where it is buried and managed. EXAMPLES: Household garbage (food wrappers, plastics) collected by garbage trucks and disposed of in landfills.
2. RECYCLING Converting waste materials into new, usable products. EXAMPLES: Household garbage (food wrappers, plastics) collected by garbage trucks and disposed of in landfills.
4. INCINERATION Incineration is the process of burning waste materials at high temperatures until they turn into ash, flue gas, and heat. It's a form of thermal treatment often used in waste management. EXAMPLES: Hospital waste (like contaminated bandages and syringes) incinerated to prevent infections.
Process of generating electricity or heat by burning waste. EXAMPLES: Power plants that burn municipal solid waste to produce electricity.
1. TOXIC WASTE Waste that can cause poisoning or serious health effects when inhaled, ingested, or absorbed. EXAMPLES: Pesticides, mercury from broken thermometers, lead- based paints.
3. CORROSIVE WASTE Waste that can destroy or damage materials and living tissue through chemical reactions. EXAMPLES: Strong acids (sulfuric acid from car batteries), strong bases (sodium hydroxide from cleaning agents)..
4. REACTIVE WASTE Waste that is unstable and can explode, release toxic gases, or undergo violent reactions. EXAMPLES: Old or unstable explosives, peroxides, cyanide-containing chemicals.
