Quote Analysis SSS Method
Shortly after being banished to the island, Cole awakes cold and hungry
when he sees the Spirit Bear for the first time. As the bear walks away he hollers,
“I ever see you again, you’re dead. I’ll teach you to be afraid of me” (Mikaelson,
16). These words clearly show the extent of Cole’s anger. The bear is innocent
and Cole has no reason to be angry, yet he is lashing out. Furthermore, these words
show that Cole wants everyone to be afraid of him, just as they were at his school.
He feels if people are afraid of him, then he can control them. Because of his past
relationship with his father, Cole has a need to be in control. Ironically, the bear is
not “afraid” of Cole as he claims. He is disinterested in Cole and this magnifies
Cole’s ego and his self-importance. The world will go on the same, with or
without Cole and his anger.
