(Due June 18, 2020)
INSTRUCTIONS
Attempt all questions, but submit solutions to questions
2, 3
and
4
only.
Diagrams are
NOT
drawn to scale. Use the given dimensions on each drawing for all your calculations
whenever necessary.
Neglect masses and frictional effects if they are not given.
Use the value g = 9.81 m/s
2
for acceleration due to gravity, and unless otherwise stated,
work to three
decimal places.
Submit your
handwritten
solutions
(for
questions
2, 3
and
4)
on not more than
4. Marks will be
a
warded
for
clear and logical presentation of worked solutions.
Worked solution without free body diagrams will not be graded!!!.
Submissions must be scanned into one pdf file and turned in via the vclassroom. Make sure your index
number is on
every page of the submitted document.
The submitted file should be saved as your Index Number_3

Question 1 The loads F 1 = 440 N and F 2 = 160 N act as shown on the truss in Figure Q1. Determine the reaction forces at A and B as well as the magnitudes of the axial forces in all the members of the truss. Indicate whether the members are in tension (T) or compression (C). Assume there is a roller type joint at B is and a pin type joint at joint C. [FAB = 531 N (T), FAC = 183 N (T)] Figure Q Question 2 Determine the reaction forces at A and C, as well as the forces (in terms of W,) in each of the members of the loaded truss shown in Figure Q 2 , and state whether they are in tension or compression. Figure Q 2 Question 3 In Figure Q3, the plane truss ABCDEHGFA forms part of the supports of a crane on an offshore oil platform. The crane exerts two forces, each of magnitude 122.5-kN, and acting vertically downwards on truss joints B and D. Determine the magnitudes of the axial forces in members AB, BC, EH and GH of the truss, and state whether they are in equilibrium or not. Figure Q 3 y x
