Step 1: Project Proposal September 21, 2007 Interface Design – JMA 308 Matt Faix

Summary:

As a senior I have recently been looking for full time employment opportunities and constantly searching for new ways to set myself apart from my competition in the business world. I believe that creating a personal portfolio website will enable me to do just that. It will be able to showcase some of my abilities and work for prospective employers and will give them a chance to look through it at their leisure. I plan to incorporate any and all qualifications, a resume, contact information, and possibly some personal interests. I don’t believe that many graduating seniors have something like this and believe that it will give me a strong edge no matter what profession I wish to pursue. I feel that this project is the perfect opportunity to actually carry this objective out and to make effective use of my efforts in completing it.

  1. Define the project/topic for which you are going to create a Web site. I will be creating a personal portfolio website to highlight my strengths, abilities, and works in pursuit of a full time employment position.
  2. Why do you want to develop the Web site? Or What will the Web site accomplish? It will give employers visibility into my abilities as well as my style. They will be able to browse at their leisure. I imagine it as almost a pre-interview stage of the entire interviewing process, or an ‘extended’ resume.
  1. Based on your response to question 6, write a value proposition statement that explains the site’s value in one sentence or less. This statement can eventually be placed on your home page. This website is to provide employers further information about my self prior to an interview or possibly after an interview to find information that they may have missed.
  2. What do you want people to think of when they think of your site? Business and Professionalism
  3. Who are the intended users? Summarize their key characteristics? What do you know about them (age, computer expertise, connectivity, disabilities, etc.) and their activities or tasks –as related to your topic/project?

Most likely the users will range in age from early 20’s to late 50’s. Considering the job market I will be entering (ISM) I believe that it is safe to assume that the users will be familiar with technology. Also under the same assumption, they use of a website as a portfolio is very appropriate for the audience.

  1. Why is the current design (or what users are currently doing) inappropriate, ineffective, or inefficient for the tasks you defined in question 3 above and why would people benefit by switching to the interface you propose. -NA
  2. How do you plan to approach the design problem? What methods, approaches, designs, ideas, etc. do you have that will enable you to improve the design (if a site already exists) or the current situation. -NA
