A. Background of the Study Student athlete are competitors in a sport competition sponsored by the education institutions in which the students are enrolled. They are full-time students and athlete at the same time (Wikipedia). Academic performance according to Annie, Howard and Mildred (1996) is the outcome of education. The extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. It can be measured through quizzes, performance tasks and most especially by taking the monthly and periodical test. Also, it can also be measured through the performance of the students during discussions, participating and answering the teacher’s questions. Impacts – these are the effects or how we influence an individual. It can be in a positive way or in a negative way. CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This research study aims impact of a student athlete impact in their academic performance. Athletics have come to play a major role in the life of high schools. For generations, athletics and education have been identified with each other. At some point being an athlete causes many changes in academics as it needs more time in training causing student athletics to not have much time inside the classroom, skipping lessons, quizzes and tasks. Academic Achievement Many researchers have created some reasons for the relationship between athletics and achievement in the classroom. Like in order to participate, athletes need to maintain an academic standard. Spady as cited in Ballantine (1981) reasoned that there is a link between mental and physical ability or that better students are involved in a variety of extracurricular activities of which sports is one of these activities. On the contrary, the time consumed in athletics and the fact that it is a physical activity may cause some athlete's to drift from academics. Academics may take a back seat to athletics due to the demand of time and energy. Academic Grade One way of measuring student’s achievement is by using the Grade Point Average (GPA). Extracurricular activities promotes academics, students that are involved in sports were more likely to have increased GPA. However, maintaining a high GPA is not easy as extracurricular are not enough in some schools. Academics

are also measured through what you’ve learn inside the school and how much you’ve learn in school. Athletics Athletics is the sports competition. It consists of several sports such as Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Gymnastics, Dance Sports and many more. Such Athletics take many time of student athletes as it need a lot of preparation and time to train. Sports Participation Sports has influenced students through fostering values such as playing fair, competitiveness and achievements. Through participating in sport competitions students has sustained amount of physical activity and benefited them in a healthy lifestyle such. Negative Effects Focusing on both academics and athletics can drain time and energy for student athletes.

B. Sampling Technique This study used the purposive sampling. Wherein in this sampling technique the researchers choose the respondents based on what desired information in which is the Student Athletes. The target sample of the study would be a total of 60 respondents. C. Statistical Tools and Analysis This study makes use of simple statistics. It deals with frequency counts and percentage. D. Research Instrument The researchers used a survey questionnaires as its main tool in the study. A questionnaire contained a series of questions designed to gather particular information. It is a research instrument having a sequence of questions with a purpose to get information from respondents and extract desired statistical data. E. Data Gathering Procedure For this study, the researchers made a cover letter to the principal to be able to conduct the research in school. The questionnaire were given to 60 respondents in the school Batac Junior College. After the researchers gathered the answered questionnaire they tallied the data and interpreted it. F. Socio-Demographic Profile In this study, the Socio-Demographic Profile was used in which there are name (optional), sex, age, grade level and section to know the identities of the selected respondents.

Grade Level. As for the grade level, this table shows that the majority (24 or 40%) of the respondents are Grade 10, a total of 19 or 32% are in Grade 11, 11 or 19% are in Grade 9 and 3 or 5% are in Grade 7 and Grade 12. Sports Frequency Percentage Volleyball Basketball Gymnastics Baseball Dance Sports Chess Track and Field Softball Arnis Badminton Aero Gymastics Futsal Sepak Takraw

Table 2. Respondents sports team involved (n=60) The majority (16 or 27%) of the respondents are Volleyball players, 12 or 20% respondents are Basketball players, 6 or 10% are Gymnast, 4 or 7% are Baseball players and from Dance Sports, 3 or 5% are Softball players, Chess and Track and Field, 2 or 4% are Arnis players and Badminton players and a total of 1 or 2% are Futsal players, Sepak Takraw players and an Aero Gymnast.

Table 3. Respondents days and hours in training (n=60) This table shows that number student athletes (25) usually train the whole week with the percentage of 42%, 22 or 37% train for 4-6 days and a total of 13 or 21% student athlete train for 1-3 days. As for how many hours they train, a majority (31 or 52%) of the respondents take 4-6 hours training period, 18 or 30% take 1-3 hours, 10 or 17% takes the whole day to train and a total of 1 or 17% of the respondents take 7-6 hours in training. Thus, this table show that student athletes still are conscious about their performance in school and doing their best to maintain their academic excellence. As academics can affect their performance in their athletics some are determined to do their best not just for their athletics but also for their academic excellence. Moreover, some respondents choose to commit their time on sports rather than academics. This just proves that most of them are pretty more determined on doing their best on athletics and focus on their athletics more on their academics. What is your attitude towards academics? F %  To just pass  To go alone and beyond

Table 6. Respondents thoughts on their Academic performance (n=60) This table concludes that most (33 or 55%) of the respondents thought on their academic performance as just something to just past on while 26 or 45% of the respondents thought is just to go alone and beyond wherein the respondents shows interest in both their performance in sports and academics. Thus, this table shows that the majority are just here to study and pass on their subjects. Reasons should be that passing on their subjects makes them aloud to continue and be on their sports. Some students are more determined on their sports than their academics and this table proves that. Moreover, some few still choose “to go alone and beyond” as their answers which states that they are willing to study and are interested on achieving academic excellence. This proves that some student athletes are still conveyed on focusing on their performance in schools not just in their field of sports.

Questions Yes F % No F % Sometimes F % Do you consider your involvement in sports as a problem to your academics?

Do teachers extends deadlines for exams exclusively for you and other student athletes?

Table 7. Respondents thoughts on their Academic and Athletics (n=60) This table shows that 26 or 43% are considering that their involvement in sports is not a nuisance in their academic yet 26 or 43% also thought that their involvement in sports is sometimes a nuisance on their academics while 7 or 14% of the respondents are considering it’s a nuisance to their studies. Also, this table shows that the majority (29 or 48%) are saying that sometimes teachers extends deadlines, 22 or 37% are saying that teachers do extends deadlines and a total of 8 or 15% are saying that teachers are not extending deadlines for them. 37% of teachers are extending deadlines exclusively for the athletes itself but the fair amount of 15% of teachers not extending the deadline which may cause a clash on schedules on training and school time may be one cause a lot of hard time on the student. Thus, this table shows a fair amount of respondents are saying that being an athlete is not a nuisance on their studies which conclude that most of them have already got used to it and already learned on managing their time. Moreover, the amount that says that it is a nuisance might be having a hard time on as their

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary This research entitled “Impacts of being a Student Athlete in the Performance of High School Students in Batac Junior College” which have the following objectives: (1.) Respondents capabilities of balancing their school works while being an athlete, (2.) Impact of being a student athlete in the academic performance, (3.) Effects in participating in athletics; and (4.) advantage and disadvantage of being a student athlete. On the part of the data analysis, it shows that majority of the student athletes have already learned on how to balance both their academics and athletics. Moreover, most of them are still having difficulties on their athletics as it also affects their athletics or vice versa. Thus, some of this difficulties might have caused by some stress on their perspective subjects that are pushing their limits as a student and some are being a burden as some of student athletes are having low grades. But somewhat some of them are being given some extra points and some teachers are extending their deadlines just to cope up in the class. Student Athletes has been doing their very best on their schools, representing their schools and more than that their city. Conclusion Based on the study, we can say that student athletes are somewhat good at balancing both their athletics and academics. This study shows that on any

difficulties student athletes are ready to adjust just for it. Some of them are stressing on their academics as it can also affect their athletics. Moreover, being a student athlete makes students well-known as they represents their school and their city. Athletics are thought to cope up as it requires a lot of time and energy both in balancing your grades on school and using all their energy on training. Recommendations The researchers therefore recommend that the following:

  1. For the future researchers, this research should be conducted in a much wider perspective or respondents.
  2. This study should further search for athletes time management
  3. This study should further research on the student’s attitudes on their academics and athletics.
