I. Introduction to the Human Body
Course Competency 1. – Demonstrate the correct usage of basic anatomical
terminology.
Course Competency 2. - Describe how the body uses feedback systems
to maintain homeostasis.
1. Explain the difference between anatomy and physiology.
2. Distinguish among the following subspecialties of anatomy: gross anatomy, regional
anatomy, systemic anatomy.
3. Describe the levels of structural organization of the human body including:
chemicals, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organism.
4. Identify the eleven body systems, list the major organs in each system, and state the
chief function(s) of each system.
5. Define homeostasis and explain its importance in maintaining body functions.
6. Describe how feedback systems are used to maintain homeostasis and include the
specific roles of receptor, control center, and effector. Distinguish between positive
and negative feedback systems.
7. Describe the proper orientation of the body in the anatomical position.
8. Define and properly use the following directional terms:
superior and inferior proximal and distal
anterior and posterior ipsilateral and contralateral
dorsal and ventral central and
peripheral cranial (cephalic) and caudal superficial and deep
medial and lateral visceral and parietal
afferent and efferent
9. Identify the following body planes:
a. sagittal, midsagittal, and parasagittal
b. frontal (coronal)
c. transverse (cross-sectional or horizontal)
