Department of Dance Spring 2013 Dance Appreciation T/R 11 : 00 AM and 12 : 30 P.M. Classes Credit Hour 4. Instructor Daryl L. Foster Office: Rm. 307 Phone: 706.542. Email: [email protected] or [email protected] Course Description Dance Appreciation is designed to foster an appreciation of the art of concert dance. This will be done through demo classes in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and Hip-hop as well as other techniques. The student will be required to see performances, write, and participate in discussions concerning what they have seen. Objectives The objective of this course is to provide an understanding of the intimate and intricate details of the dance making process; also to provide the student with the tools necessary in crafting fine work. Emphasis will also be placed on critical analysis choreographers’ works, and the ability to be able to speak intelligently and openly about issues in the field. Contents The student should expect an extremely rigorous and demanding course. There will be in- class work, and intense independent study. The course will culminate in a comprehensive final examination. Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course all students should be able to demonstrate a working, intelligent understanding of concert dance, exhibit a healthy interest in the art, and have a brief historical perspective of dance in America, and the world.
Grading standards The student grade will be as follows: Attendance/ Class Participation- 2 0% Observation Paper 10% Mid-Term Project 2 0% Final Project- 50% Text There will be other suggested reading throughout the course. There will be assigned readings. Video study Late Assignments Late assignments will only be accepted with prior arrangement, and permission from instructor. Attendance The student will be deducted daily points for each absence after 5 classes; then, he/she will loose points for attendance.
