Boldmaa Bat-Erdene Introduction to Sociology Summary note on the panel discussion: “Technology in the way of studying” 2019.12.01 at CEU As there have been many advances in technology over the past twenty-five years, it had become crucial for researchers to demonstrate the affection of technology in different fields. The aim of the discussion is to compare and contrast ways of teaching and learning through digital media to traditional approach, focusing on its’ affection of education. First of all, we should consider the effectiveness and utilization of usage of tablets and smartphones for teaching scholars and students in their work. It is widely believed that electronic devices can not generate an efficient learning aspect, instead it has many disadvantages regarding to health and studying. However, Myrberg C. and Wilberg N. (2015) argued that a digitally born textbook is by far the best alternative to a print textbook when it comes to studying. But as long as the existing application interfaces cannot address the shortcomings of screens regarding paper under certain circumstances. This claim contradicts the traditional statement of negative perspective of digital learning outcomes. Secondly, we should focus on the level of usage of technology in studying. Even though technology significantly improve the environment of studying and unleash the potential of students, it is still arguable whether traditional way of studying should be abandoned or not. As Michael Fullan and Katelyn Donnelly (2014) wrote, on the one hand, digital tools and resources have the potential of enable, expand and accelerate learning in ways previously unimaginable. On the other hand, most of the billions invested by schools and education systems in technology have not achieved that potential. In the following figure 7, which is about technology usage and knowledge creation, it is shown that basic uses of technology increases writing, practicing procedures, finding information skills by 15%, 26% and 36% respectively. According to these statements, it is not the proper time to rely on high level usage of technology alone, regarding to education system. In conclusion, as education system includes both technology and traditional way of studying, it is assumed that child develops a various way of learning. Even though technology cannot be the best education provider, it necessarily need to be developed all the time.
