Task 1 Western Governors University Introduction to Humanities- C
Task 1 A. Analyze the acceptedwork by doing the following:
- Describe the historical events or innovations that characterize the period in which the work was created (suggested length of 1–2 paragraphs). Primavera was painted during the Renaissance period in the humanities. The Renaissance period began in the 12th^ century and went through the 17th^ century. It followed the Middle Ages or Medieval Period also referred to as the “Dark Ages.” During the Dark Ages there was a lack of cultural advancements. So, the Renaissance period was a chance for new cultural and intellectual growth. Renaissance is the French term for “rebirth.” A rebirth of the Classical period (MindEdge, Inc., 2020). There were many historical events and some innovations that came from the Renaissance period. During the Renaissance period began the Age of Discovery. With this came many cultural exchanges including: Italian glassmaking, African ivory, the Spanish “Golden Age” and the printing press from Europe. From this time of exploration came the term “Renaissance Man” as some explorers were able to speak multiple languages. The printing press by Johannes Gutenberg revolutionized mass communication throughout Europe. The first printed book is the Bible (MindEdge, Inc., 2020). The Renaissance period also had many of my favorite pieces of artwork and literature; from artists and novelists such as, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Sandro Botticelli and Shakespeare. The painters at this time started using linear perspective and chiaroscuro to help create an illusion of depth in paintings. They also began to use oil paints during this period (MindEdge, Inc., 2020).
- Analyze how this work reflects a theme or stylistic characteristic from its period (suggested length of 1–2 paragraphs). The Renaissance period has many themes which include: rebirth of classicism, humanism, rationalism, expansion of universities, individualism/self-fashioning and protestant reformation. One of the themes from the Renaissance period that is present in Primavera is the rebirth of classicism. Within the rebirth of classicism were these classical values: “humanism (the importance and perfectibility of human beings)” and “balance (the coming together of beauty, goodness, and truth)” (MindEdge, 2020.)In Primavera we are able to see perfectibility and symmetry of the figures. This was evident in statues that were sculpted within the Classical period. Also, the setting is in what looks to be a garden which makes it relatable to its viewers. Thepainting provides agreat aesthetic experience for its viewers. This painting features a group of mythological figures from the Classical period including goddesses and gods; Venus, Flora, Mercury and Zephyrus. (
