Task 5 – Evidence-Based Strategies WGU – D Schools as Communities of Care A. Context of Situation - Natural Disaster There was a severe storm with a tornado touchdown while school was in session. The storm destroyed two homes, damaged five houses, and caused property damage. One of the homes that was destroyed and five of the houses damaged had kids living in them. The first destroyed house was lived in by an older couple. They were out of town when the storm happened, but they lost all their belongings. The second destroyed house was lived in by a couple in their upper thirties with three school aged children. All three of the children were at school, the father was at work, and the mother and their two dogs were home and did not make it through. Three of the five houses that were damaged were lived in by middle-aged couples, all who were at work. A single mother and her two school aged children lived in one of the damaged homes. They made it through safely as well as the children were at school and the mother waited it out in the storm cellar. In the last damaged home lived a couple in their thirties with four school aged children. All the children were at school and the parents were at work. Luckily, besides a little wind damage, the school building and students were not harmed. The people involved are the homeowners/families of the seven properties, the school staff/administration/students, first responders, and the community. This natural disaster had a huge impact on the community. Not only were houses and property destroyed/damaged but a life and pets were lost as well. Tornados cause
environmental contamination, pollution, economic loss, injuries/loss of life, vegetation destruction, and psychological effects [ CITATION San \l 1033 ]. The community is affected by the loss of life, property, destruction of properties and nature, as well as the pollution from the storm. Debris from the houses, vehicles, and environment are uprooted and blown to other parts of the community. This situation impacts the students at home because they have also lost a community member. For the ones that lived in the home that was destroyed their entire lives have been uprooted. Not only did they lose their home, their belongings, and their pet but they also lost their mother. They will have to live in a new house which can also cause them to feel unsafe. This natural disaster impacts the other students because even if they are not in one of the homes with damage, they still will have psychological damage from going through the event. They may be afraid to be home by themselves or even be unable to go to sleep because they are afraid that there will be another tornado and they will not be safe. This situation impacts the students as school because it could cause them to become fearful of being at school. Just like when they are home, they could end up not feeling safe while at school. They could be afraid that another tornado is going to touch down and next time it will damage the school with them inside. Students impacted by this disaster could become unable to pay attention during class, restless, disruptive, emotional, anxiety filled, and start to miss days of school. The students may feel safer being at home with their parents instead of at school because of the trauma experienced. B. Coping Strategy A strategy that I would use to help students cope with this scenario is to be supportive, patient, open, calm, and caring. I would make sure to have open communication with the students’ caregivers. I would be open and talk with students about their feelings and concerns. At the end of the discussion, I would make sure that I include what our safety procedures are and helpful ways for them to cope. I would be supportive in any way possible and if a student is distressed, I would help them talk with a more
