Question 3
You’ll read a short passage on a topic pertaining to campus (you have 45-50 seconds to read) and then
you’ll listen to two people giving an opinion about the topic with one of them expressing a stronger
opinion either in favor of or against the topic. After that, you will be asked a question based on what
you’ve read and heard. You have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak your
response.
As you read the passage, you should always look at the title of the passage to see whether it is an
announcement or a letter from the campus newspaper discussing a proposal, etc. The beginning of the
passage usually introduces the topic-(about half of the passage)- and the rest gives two reasons or facts
along with details. It is better to take notes once after reading the first half and another time after
reading the second half. As you listen try to recognize the speaker’s attitude through paying attention to
intonation, stress and word choice and take notes on the attitude as well as reasons they give for that.
There are several ways as to how to start and develop your response but there is one easy possibility.
You can start your response talking about the reading passage and its details for about 20 to 25 seconds
and spend 35-40 seconds talking about the speaker’s opinion.

Now look at one question along with a sample answer. Letter in the Centerville College News The administration has plans to acquire a new sculpture for campus. We should all oppose this plan. The university’s poor financial condition led it to increase the price for campus housing and tuition by 15% this past year. Surely then it is no financial position to purchase such an expensive sculpture. Moreover, just look at the sculpture: several 60-foot steel plates, jutting out of the earth at odd angles! It’s so large, it’ll take up all the green space in front of the campus center! This is public space that should be reserved for students to use. Main point: letter asking to oppose buying new sculpture Sup 1: it’s expensive and Univ. bad financial situation Sup 2: very big, it takes up all green space in front of campus center used by students Woman: Paul’s opinion unconvincing Sup1 : glad something nice on campus Sup2 : an anonymous donor paying for it not the Univ. Sup3 : Paul, his friends play soccer, now need to use another part on campus The reading passage is a letter by a student named Paul asking everyone to oppose their university’s plan to buy a new sculpture for the campus. According to the letter, the student thinks the sculpture is pricy and the university is not in a good financial situation to buy such an expensive sculpture. Besides, the sculpture is too big and would take up all green space in front of the campus center which is used by students. However, the woman thinks Paul’s opinion is not convincing. First, in her opinion, the sculpture is something nice to be on campus. Also, she says that an anonymous donor will pay for the sculpture not the university so Paul is wrong. The woman adds that the student and his friends play on the lawn, where the sculpture is going to be placed and this is why they are upset because they have to find an alternative on campus.
