ME2560. STATICS – TEST No. 1
1. Knowing that α = 55
o
and that the boom AC exerts on pin C a force along
line AC, determine the magnitude of that force and the tension in cable BC.
Start your analysis by showing the FBD of the problem. (3 pts)
2. A transmission tower is held by three guy wires anchored by bolts
at B, C, and D. If the tension in wire AB is 525 lb, find the
magnitudes of the tensions in cables AC and AD and the force
exerted by the three cables on the tower. Also find the angles
between cables AC and AD and between cables AC and AB. Use
vector approach to determine the tensions and dot product to find
the angles. Show the FBD of your analysis. (4 pts)
3. The two cables exert the forces shown on the pole.
Determine the magnitude of the projected component of
each force acting along the axis OA of the pole. Use dot
product. (3 pts.)
