SMSGhaspreparedsampletextmaterialsforgrades1through12designedtoillustratethe

kindsofcurriculawhichtheStudyGroupfeelsaredemandedbytheincreaseduseofscience,

technology,andmathematicsinoursociety,andmaterialsdesignedtohelpteachersprepare

themselvestoteachsuchacurriculum.Extensiveclassroomtrialshavebeenconducted.A

secondmajoractivityoftheSMSGistheNationalLongitudinalStudyofMathematical

Abilitiesinwhichstudentsoriginallyingrades4,7,and10arebeingfollowedtodeterminethe

effectsofconventional,SMSG,andothernewcoursesequencesonperformanceinmathematics

andscienceinschoolandcollege.Thisstudyhasbeenextendedtothelowerprimarylevelin

ordertoprovideasoundbasisoffactualknowledgeforfurtherreforminmathematicsinthe

earlygrades.Specialtestsformeasuringmathematicsachievementhavebeendevelopedto

evaluatehighercognitiveskills.Thisstudyhasalsobeenconcernedwithsuchvariables as

socio-economicstatusandthetimingandplacementofexposuretomathematicalconcepts.
