Deforestation According to the political activist Mahatma Gandhi, "What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another." Deforestation is defined as “the action of clearing a wide area of trees.” Unfortunately, we are losing many of our forests every year due to deforestation. There are many causes of deforestation including agriculture, urbanization, and logging activities. As reported by Stanley, tropical rainforests are experiencing the most deforestation of any other place on Earth because of road construction and urbanization. Building not only but also upgrading roads into forests makes them more accessible for exploitation. Some of the negative main effects of deforestation are soil erosion, loss of habitat, and pollution. To begin with, one of the important effects of deforestation for the environment, is soil erosion. Soil erosion is when soil is unstable which can lead to harmful effects. The main effect from soil erosion is flooding. Soil erosion can create natural disasters. The particular reason for the circumstances is as the soil moves and disappears, and the forest won’t be steady. According to Human Rights Careers, places with a lot of soil erosion are used to having more flooding, mudslides, dust storms, and water pollution. “With their roots, fallen leaves, and branches, forests shield the topsoil from these harmful elements. When trees are cut down, the soil is left exposed.”(Soken-Huberty) Another negative effect of the deforestation to the environment, is loss of habitat for animals. According to Earth and Animals A-Z “Once their habitat is lost, they are on their way to extinction. According to recent estimates, the world is losing 137 species of plants, animals and insects every day to deforestation. A horrifying 50,000 species become extinct each year. Habitat is an environment not only but also a place where animals and plants live and grow together.”
Deforestation can impact animal life in the forest by endangering their lives. After cutting down the trees for human purposes, all the animals in the forest will lose their homes. For example, birds will not have a place to make their nests in trees. Animals won’t have a place to hide from their predators and so they could be in danger. An article from Amazon Aid on the effects of deforestation says that “It is estimated that 100,000 species become extinct in tropical forests yearly. The loss of one species in an ecosystem can affect others who rely on it.” The main driver of global deforestation is beef production, responsible for about 41% of deforestation annually. This equals roughly 2.1 million hectares each year, or about half the size of the Netherlands. The starting fact highlights how our demand for beef leads to the clearing of forests for cattle grazing and feed production. This not only destroys habitats but also disrupts the delicate balance of ecosystems (Earth.Org). However, there’s hope as awareness grows and calls for sustainable practicees increase. It is the essential to find ways to balance our need for food with environmental preservation. Pollution is the third main effect of deforestation. Carbon dioxide is absorbed and stored by trees which prevents some air pollution. Deforestation causes air pollution by reducing the oxygen and increasing the carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The air pollution gets worse which has a negative impact on all living things including the animals living in the forests. According to the World Wildlife Foundation, the more trees that are cut down the more carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases will be released into the atmosphere. Global warming is a major issue in the world today, and 10% of global warming is due to deforestation (World Wildlife Foundation). Deforestation causes other types of water to get into the oceans and rivers causing water pollution. When a forest is destroyed, fish and other animals that live in water won’t have protection from the trees, and their habitat can also be damaged.
