Open Circulatory System – common among vertebrates (organisms that have backbones)
Blood – Heart – pumps blood to different parts of the body Blood Vessels – has 3 major types (arteries, capillaries, veins) Lymph
Arteries – carries the blood away from the heart. Veins – carries the blood from the capillaries and back to the heart. Capillaries – is where the exchange of water and chemicals occurs.
Cardiovascular System – transports blood Lymphatic System – transports fluid
Epicardium – outermost layer Myocardium – muscular part of the heart wall Endocardium – innermost layer that lines the heart cavities
Right Atrium – receives oxygen and pumps blood from the vena cava Left Atrium – receives blood from the pulmonary veins Right Ventricle – pumps blood to the lungs for oxygenation Left Ventricle – pumps oxygen
Atria – receives chambers of the heart Superior Vena Cava – carries blood from the upper body part of the heart Inferior Vena Cava – carries the blood from the lower body part of the heart.
Red Blood Cells – oxygen carrier (erythrocytes) White Blood Cells – fights infections and other diseases (leukocytes) Plasma – distributes nutrients and prevents infections Platelet – helps heal wounds (megakaryocytes)
