The Circulatory System:

Life’s Transport Network

  1. Circulatory system = transport system of the body.

  2. Main function: carries oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells and removes waste.

  3. Consists of blood, heart, and blood vessels.

  4. Plasma: 55% of blood, mostly water + proteins

  5. RBCs: Carry oxygen via hemoglobin

  6. WBCs: Defend against germs

  7. Platelets: Help in blood clotting

Vessel Feature Function Arteries Thick walls, no valves Carry oxygenated blood away from heart Veins Thin walls, valves Carry deoxygenated blood to heart Capillaries Single layer wall Exchange of O₂, CO₂, nutrients, waste
