That’s why is so important to find yours and try to stick to it. Study context chapter 02 5 Why is context important?2.1 The environment in which you study is one of the key elements for success. Both graduates and students stated it’s something they care about. Survey question: Is the environment in which you study important to you? STUDENTS GRADUATES Yes, I usually study in a specific environment (in my room, in the library, etc.) No, the environment doesn’t matter 73% 63% 27% 37% There are 3 types of context: psychological context, organizational context and physical environment. Let’s take a closer look to each one of them. Enthusiasm and having a clear mind are essential when hitting the books: if you want to achieve a high grade, the first thing to do is to believe that you can do it! 6 Study context Psychological context2.2 Close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths. Visualize the colors of the rainbow in sequence, it will help you be more focused! Before studying, take 5 minutes to relax: 1. 2. 3. Having an organized study routine is another factor that enhances your productivity and helps you feel less tired by the end of the day. Organizational context2.3 Split your day in different time slots based on when you’re most productive and create a daily schedule. Write down a to-do list with tasks to be completed (e.g: “finish chapter 3”) by the end of the day. Give every task an estimated time and stick to it. 1. 2. 3. Since you spend a lot of time studying (at least we assume so!), the place where you study should be as comfortable as possible. Physical Environment2.4 7 Try to set up your space in a corner at a small table or reserve a study room if you can. Use ear plugs. Choose a light and airy area. Make sure you have everything close at hand (paper, highlighters, books, water, etc.) to limit time wasting. Avoid background noises (TV, chatting) and distractions (Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) Choose a comfortable and calm place. If you study in the library or other public places: 1. 2. 3. If you study at home: 1. 2. 3. Study context An alternative strategy recommended by the Docsity Education Team is taking breaks once you check off a task. Choose a task that you want to complete (e.g. read chapter 2) and take a 10-15 minute break only when you have completed the task. 10 The importance of study breaks Take breaks after checking off a task3.3 Having an effective study method is necessary if you want to get the best results. You can either reuse the same method or switch it up for each of your exam subjects. The important thing is to follow a strategy. The most efficient study method results in comprehension and a deeper memorization of the subject. The ultimate study method chapter 04 11 Survey question: Do you have your own study method? STUDENTS GRADUATES Yes, I have one method for any subject 34% 36% 49% Yes, I have different methods depending on the subject 30% No, I don’t have a study method 2%49% Survey question: What’s your study method? STUDENTS Read > Underline/highlight > Map out > Repeat 46% 10% Read > Underline/highli ght > Repeat 28% Read > Map out 9% 7% GRADUATES 32% 11%25% 23% 9% Read > Map out > Repeat other The ideal study method is made up of 4 steps: read, underline, map, and repeat out loud. Each of these is crucial to achieve successful results. We’ll go through each one of them in the following chapters. 12 The ideal method4.1 Maximize your concentration: read as if it was your only opportunity to go through the content. Get straight to the point: try to understand the meaning of the topic from the start, through key statements, it will be easier to memorize. 1. 2. The ultimate study method 1st STEP: READ Reading is the basis of studying: by tweaking your reading method, you’ll significantly reduce your study time. Depending on how much time you have to prepare, you can use two techniques: In-depth reading (if you have more time to prepare) Focused reading. Repeat out loud: it will help you memorize things better as your brain uses both visual and auditory memories. 1. 2. Making diagrams and summaries is extremely useful. However, it is also time- consuming. If you lack time or the ability to diagram, you can browse more than 600,000 notes and summaries of all subjects at any time on Docsity! IF YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO SCHEMATIZE 15 The ultimate study method This last step enables you to retain the information long term: if you stop at the first step (Reading), you only activate your short- term memory, and this deteriorates quickly. This is not ideal. Explain the concept out loud to someone else if you can: the need to be understood will force you to develop structured statements rich in definitions and examples that you’ll be able to use in exams and projects. This will also improve your critical thinking and public speaking skills. 4th STEP: REPEAT OUT LOUD Remember: only by elaborating on the content, will you be able to learn and memorize new concepts efficiently! When repeating out loud, try to explain concepts as if you had to explain them to a child. Review the content within 24 hours to make sure you absorbed it. 1. 2. 3. When preparing for finals do not underestimate the value of a healthy diet: if your brain isn’t given the right fuel, it cannot give you the concentration you need. Choose foods rich in nutrients to give your body enough energy! Final tips chapter 05 16 Alimentation5.1 Study! Don’t waste time worrying if you have studied enough! Breath deeply and relax. Take 10 minutes before the exam to calm down and concentrate your mind. 1. 2. How to overcome exam anxiety5.2 BEFORE Are you having a mental block and you fear that you won’t remember anything from your preparation? Put it this way: however important an exam might seem, it’s not the end of the world if you fail it.
