CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

A. Background Language has very important role in expressing ideas, thought, experience, feeling and desires; it is means tool of understanding ourselves ,our society and resolving some of the problem and tensions that arise from human interaction. language can be used into a feeling of togetherness, but it can also distinguish us from others. The varieties of language and dialects in the world express a multiplicity of the world viewes,literatures and ways of life or culture of man. English as as the second language for indonesian students find very difficult to master aspecially for the productive skill as writing and speaking skill. The most difficult skill commonly is formal on the writing skill because it is progressive skill that needs much process such as prewriting, writing and revising. In indonesia English is taught as compulsory subject in secondary schools up of university levels. It becomes one of national subject in secondary school up university. In school curriculum base competent the government of indonesia, in this case , the ministry of national educational decided english as one of the subjects that use four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Generally , writing can be interpreted as act of forming or tracing a character on paper or other suitable materials with with a pen or pencil, Rivers (2002) distinguished writing from other skills according to the form. Writing is a way to produce language, which you do naturally when you speak. writing is communicating with other in a verbal way. Writing is also an action a procces of

Dealing the external factors the students still find the difficulty to differentiate english sentence pattern from indonesian one though there are some similiarities in them. As aresult , they find it difficult to write a correct sentence in english. As the students are not able to write correct sentences, they get diffifulty to axpress thier ideas in paragraphs where they have to make the paragraphs cohesive and coherent. This problem becomes worse because students’ creativity influences the learning teaching procces. Some students come to class with various creativity levels affected by many causes, like emotional state , intelligence, and environment as well as given materials. Meanwhile, internet provides us with authentic and real communicating English.That is much better than those that are especially designed for textbooks. From internet, the needed information and knowledge about argumentative essay including the elements, outlines, important expressions, tips, tricks, and many others can be browsed easily. Internet also provides the students many sites to improve their creativity in writing argumentative essays. The use of the internet also supports the shift from the traditional teachercentered classroom to one in which the students are in the center. Students are motivated by using computers and talking live to others. Without being conscious of it, the students will no longer consider learning a language a boring enterprise. They will be encouraged to learn more.

Based on the statement above , the writer is inspired to conduct a study on the title” The effectiveness of internet based materials to teach writing viewed from students creativity in SMAN 1 BAJENG “.

B. Problem statement The research problems are formulated as follows :

  1. Are internet materials more effective than textbook materials to teach writing for students in SMAN 1 BAJENG?
  2. How does internet materials improve the students’ creativity in writing argumentative essay?

C. Research objective

  1. To know whether internet materials are more effective than textbook one in teaching writing for the students in SMAN 1 BAJENG
  2. To know whether the students creativity in writing argumentative essay.

D. Significance of the research The result is expected to be able to give some benefits for those who teach English especially at the SMAN 1 BAJENG and for english lecturers in general because they can get a clear description about how to use the teaching materials in teaching english effectively to students of this program in which it should be suited to their characteristics. Besides, it can lead him/her how to create an interesting and comfortable atmosphere in the classroom so that the students will not feel bored to join the learning creativity. Meanwhile , the benefits for the students , it can serve them more comfortable and supporting situations inside the classroom so that they will be more interested in joining the class.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A. Previous Related Research Finding There have been some more researches in improving writing skill, either by implementing teaching methods, techniques or materials. One of them is conducted by A.chaedar Alwasilah in 2004 who implemented cooperative method to 93 students majoring in English at pasundan university, A leading private university in Bandung west java. The result of his research show that cooperative writing improved student competence as well as performansce in writing. During the research the respondents felt happy(64.5%) learned much (66.7%) realized their own weakness (76.3%) more open for others suggestion (66.7%) and thought their writing was getting better(58%).despite it strengths, this cooperative writing has some weakness. Adelstein in 2009 conducted a research entitled “The effectiveness of think pair share to teach writing for the ninth grade students of SMAN 1 plosoklaten kediri viewed from motivation. The result of his research are that :

  1. Think pair share is effective to teach writing
  2. Students with high motivation
  3. There is interaction between teaching technique and students motivation in teaching writing. Boyle In 1982 also conducted a research dealing with the use of authentic materials. His research which entitles,” authentic and adapted texts in the study of 6

English in 2 swedish upper secondary schools and a study of students and teacher attitudes towards these texts” ii aimed at finding out which attitudes teacher teaching of english to swedish grammar schools. There are some similarities between the researches mentioned above and the research that will be conducted later. It is undeniable that the previous researches focused on the use of methods, techniques, and approaches to teach certain skill. In this research, the use of authentic materials and the use of internet to teach writing will be experimented. Besides the similarities, there are also some differences. First, it is found that the previous researches tried to see the effects of certain teaching techniques, methods, and approaches to teach writing from students’ attitude and motivation. Second, the previous researches were conducted at secondary schools while this research will be carried out at a university.

B. The General Concept of writing

1. Definition of writing Writing is said to be the fourth competence in learning language. Although many students said that writing is a difficult competence, writing is actually an easy and enjoyable activity if there is appropriate methods, interesting teaching techniques, and actual materials. Writing is an activity in which learners form graphic symbols, arrange them to form words, and put the words in order and link them together in a certain way to produce a logical sequence of sentence (Need Elizabeth Cowan and Kate Kiefer 1990:10)
