MORE:

Beowulf is a long epic poem probably composed in the 7 th^ century but it is probably written down by a scholar in the 10 th^ century. It is of over 3,000 lines and it is written in Anglo-Saxon or old English. It is considered as historical document. Beowulf shows features of the society of Anglo-Saxons.

Anglo-Saxon society was based on a military aristocracy. The unit was the clan which was bound by loyalty to the lord.

The story is divided into two parts.

The reign of Hrothgar, the king of Denmark, is attacked by a monster called Grendel. Beowulf, the nephew of the king of the Gaets, goes to Denmark to help Hrothgar in fact Beowulf fights the monster which is mortally wounded and dies.

Beowulf becomes king of the Gaets and he reigns for 50 years. One day a dragon starts devastating his country so Beowulf kills him but he is mortally wounded and dies. His body is burnt on a pyre with his armour and treasure.

Beowulf symbolizes the force of Good that struggles against the force of Evil (monsters). Beowulf himself is identified with Christ because he sacrifices himself to help his people.
