EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

After a three year study in BSc. Information Technology, the student enrolled on a two months internship program at Accra Technical University formerly Accra Polytechnic since internship is mandatory and failure to enroll on the internship program renders a student unfit for graduation. Prior to this internship, the student had some goals he wanted to achieve by the end of the training and it includes, application of concepts learnt in class and improving his interpersonal skills in a working environment The student had the opportunity to start working toward achieving his set goals from 8th^ January , 2018 to 9^ th^ March , 2018. He was officially assigned to the I T Department. The Head of Technical Unit was the student’s supervisor Therefore, his supervisor assigned, approved and evaluated the tasks of the intern. Some of the tasks assigned to him included; laying internet cables to connect all the computers in the Laboratory, troubleshooting network connection, and fixing of computer hardware, and printer issues. However, in this report, the author reflected the designing tasks he was assigned and the challenges he faced. He also elaborated on some hardware issues he was assigned to fix and the network issues that came up in the various offices and how he troubleshot those issues since these are directly related to his course of study.

CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1. Introduction

The industrial internship training program is an essential component of the curriculum of the university, the Advanced School of System And Data Studies (Assdas) the Bsc. Information Technology. The semester field practical program will not be completed without the industrial internship. The internship period is usually a maximum of two months, during which students are expected to acquire additional practical experience to supplement their course of study in university. They are also exposed to the real world of work and its challenges which will prepare them towards their future career. The concept behind is to produce and prepare a skilled labor for company and public , it is prepared for those who offer programs which have been programmed for the middle level sector of economy to enhance the personnel to develop good working skill and been able to achieve his goals in the course studied. The tertiary level of education program, which has been structured in such a way that students acquire practical knowledge of their respective programs and profession in other for them to acquire the necessary skill and been able to work effectively and efficiently. This report is the outcome of the eight weeks practical training I had at the Orion Ghana Limited I.T department It is said to be a comprehensive program where students are required to give their maximum best in acquiring the necessary training for which they engaged themselves in with the company for their internship programmed. Reports and assessment form is submitted to the training program to ascertain the success of the program and the amount of seriousness students attached to it.

  1. Background Accra Technical University Accra Technical University formerly Accra Polytechnic was the first Polytechnic to be established. It was established in 1949 as a Technical School and commissioned in 1957 as Accra Technical Institute. In 1963, the Institute was renamed Accra Polytechnic, by the orders of the then President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. By the Polytechnic Law of 1992 (PNDC 321), which became fully operative in the 1993/1994 academic year, Accra Polytechnic was elevated to a tertiary status. The institution provide middle-level manpower to revolutionise and feed the growing Ghanaian industries., Accra technical university made a tremendous progress in its review and expansion of curricula to suit contemporary needs. The institution began to offer Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Building Technology, Civil Engineering, Furniture Design and Production, Secretaryship and Management Studies, Bilingual Secretaryship and Management Studies, Accountancy, Marketing, Purchasing and Supply, Hotel Catering and Institutional Management, Fashion Design and Textiles, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science, and Science Laboratory Technology. The technician courses offered by the institution were maintained. In 20016 the Accra polytechnic was upgraded to university status and was rename Accra Technical University Accra Technical University currently, offers three (5) Degree and fifteen (15) HND Programmes. These programmes are run in three schools. As a tertiary institution, Accra Technical University is governed by a Council established under the Polytechnic Act 2007 (Act 745).

When a computer is faulty, the ICT department is responsible to isolate the computer and perform a complete check up on the computer to figure out the issue. After the problem has been found it is fixed, if it is not, then a new computer is brought and replace

2.2.5 Installing new software

The ICT department provides this service for all the users who need access to the institution's computer systems. This might entail installing new software or hardware, repairing hardware that has become faulty, training employees in the use of new software, and troubleshooting problems with the system or with an individual's computer.

3. Duties Performed

The intern had a lot of tasks to perform during his internship period. Some of them include, fixing of computer hardware, network and printer issues. Below are the detailed explanation of some of the tasks he performed especially the ones relating to his course of study:

2.4. Fixing Computer Issues

When a computer is faulty, it is treated with the highest priority so that it is fixed immediately. Three main kinds of issues that usually the office is faced with are; computer hardware issues, printer issues and internet issues. The intern was tasked to fix some of the issues during his time there and when the problem was beyond him, he calls for the administrator’s assistance.

2.4.1. Hardware Issues

The hardware problem that the intern worked on was the head of academic affairs’s faulty desktop computer. The computer was working fine and it shut down itself automatically. All attempts to boot the computer failed. So he offered to help. His supervisor gladly accepted his request and told him exactly what happened to computer system. With the information he was given, he attempted to work on the issue right at the head of academic affair’s office but the administrator suggested that the system unit was taken to the ICT office to work on it there rather than trying to fix it at the HOD’s’s table. He also gave him the tools he will need like a screw driver

behind the printer and that was when he saw that the printer was capable of printing over a network. He quickly told the administrator about the discovery he made and he was given the green light to test the network printing after he was done installing the printer’s software. That was exactly what he did. After installing the software successfully, he printed a test page to show that the printer was ready to accept command and print out documents. He then connected the printer and after some little configurations, he was able to print a test page through the printer’s network. After he was successful, the administrator asked him to do the same configurations on the rest of the computers so that users can print a document at where they are rather than copying the document to a flash drive to print as they been doing. Therefore, the intern configured all the computers to be able to communicate with the printer and printed test pages to make sure they could all print.

2.4.3. Internet Issues

During the author’s time of internship, the institution had several internet connectivity issues due to several reasons like, the newly installed wireless network interface’s software not functioning properly, misconfigured ip address, changing of password on the access point without informing the other workers and general internet issues from the internet service provider which in this case is Vodafone. The author briefly elaborated on these issues and how they were rectified.

On one of the computers where a wireless interface was recently installed had troubles when trying to connect to the access point for internet. It would not show the SSID (Service Set IDentifier) of the network whiles all other computers were able to show and connect. When the administrator assigned this issue to the intern to fix, his first instinct was to change the wireless interface because he suspected the hardware was not functioning properly. But after he tried to configure some settings with the software, it came to his attention that the software was not doing what it was asked to do. Therefore, he uninstalled the software and installed it again and the issue was fixed. The computer was now able to show the available SSIDs and connect to the internet.

Another issue was that, on one of the computers, the administrator did some configurations which made him change the ip address of the computer. Later, the user complained that he could not connect to the internet therefore he called the intern for his assistance. During the troubleshooting process, he checked the ip address configurations which of course, did not match with the network’s ip address range that was being used. To fix that problem, he set the ip configurations to allow the computer to be assigned an ip address by the access point automatically. It worked and the user was now able to connect to the internet.

There was also a time where the administrator changed the password of the access point without informing the other workers and this caused difficulty in connecting to the internet. The workers called for the intern’s assistance

CHAPTER THREE

RELEVANCE OF INTERNSHIP TO THE PROGRAM OF STUDY

The intern benefited a lot from this internship program due to the fact that it helped him understand how important his field of study is to the work environment. He is currently reading Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with Network Systems and most of the modules he has successfully completed under this course came in handy during his time at the workplace.

Also, he did some modules that helped him performed the hardware and computer network issues that he faced during his internship period. These courses are: Network Administration and Management (IT301) which he did in level 300 first semester respectively. These course gave him insight on how computer networks work and how to troubleshoot when there are connectivity issues.

CHAPTER FOUR

DISCUSSIONS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Discussions

The intern benefited a lot from this internship. Some of the benefits are:

▲ He learnt new skills

The intern gained some knowledge on, how to configure some settings on the Access Point router and how to attempt a computer issue professionally.

▲ He had a practical aspect of what was taught in class

The intern had learned, sharing of printers on a network, troubleshooting a network and fixing of computer hardware issues were mere theories that were taught in school but at the workplace, the intern had to do research and apply all the knowledge he had acquired from class.

▲ Improved his interpersonal skills

The author also improved his interpersonal skills because he was a reserved and a shy person but due to the nature of his work and the people surrounding him, he was able to overcome his shyness.
