THE JESUIT COMMITMENT for JUNIORS

Meetings: Students are responsible for checking their Jesuit email and listening for announcements about meetings and events.

Service: Learning to be of service to others is vital to a Jesuit education. There are many ways to be of service to the environment. Check with agencies such as SOLVE, help with a park or beach clean-up, or talk with the mentor of the Green Team. For other ideas on how to do this, talk with the Christian Service Director. This four hour requirement does not fulfill any of the Christian Service hours.

Campus Ministry: Another key component of Jesuit High School is the Campus Ministry program. Some events are required, but many are not. Go on a Junior Encounter or become an active member of Setons, Knights, or the Liturgy Band. Attending a Friday Liturgy does not satisfy this requirement.

Co-curriculars - Multicultural Event: Our world is much larger than Jesuit High School. It is important to learn about other cultures and people. Attend or assist with a diversity conference on or off campus, join and be an active member of the Unity Council, attend a cultural event off campus, or visit the Holocaust Memorial at Washington Park and read the information about a time when others were persecuted. Talk with the Diversity Director about possible events. Attendance will enrich your life!

Brown Bag Luncheons: Brown Bag Luncheons are held to inform students about special topics. They are excellent opportunities to hear guest speakers and learn about the world outside of Jesuit. Bring your lunch and join us at the next Brown Bag.

School Spirit: As a junior, you are ready to help mentor the freshmen and sophomores. Become a member of Ambassadors and help with Open House. Talk with the Admissions Director and the Diversity Director about these opportunities.

Leadership: One of our goals is to help form leaders, “men and women for others.” Learn more about leadership by attending two Leadership Seminars or read Heroic Leadership and write a reflection on the four pillars of Jesuit leadership and how they apply to you. Papers must include quotes from the book and be typed, 12-point font, double spaced, and at least two pages in length. Make sure your name, date, and title of the book are on the paper. The dates and times of the Seminars are listed on the school calendar.

Alumni Project: Work with the Alumni Director to complete the Care Package/Postcard Project.

Intellectual Growth - Read a Book from the Junior Commitment List: After you read one of the books from the Junior Commitment List below, write a reflection on it. Papers must include quotes from the book and be typed, 12-point font, double spaced, and at least two pages in length. Make sure your name, date, and title of the book are on the paper. Include the following in your reflection:

  • Context: What is the time period and setting for the book?
  • Experience: Who was your favorite character and why? Describe your favorite part of the book.
  • Reflection: As you reflect on the book, what touched you the most? What changed your thoughts or feelings?
  • Action: How will you continue to incorporate what you have learned from this book? When your paper is completed, staple it to this form.
