Introduction To comprehend another’s language, one must feel comfortable in the culture of the new language and in face-to-face communication. This integration of language and cross-cultural learning cannot be incorporated in many ESL/EFL courses students not only learn language but also receive the exposure to aspects of culture. Beyond Language: Cross-Cultural Communication has been used as a textbook for mainly third-year or four-year students at Sai Gon University. There are two objectives of this course. In terms of language purpose, students can broaden reading and comprehension skill, develop reading skills and increase conversational fluency. On the other hand, regarding cross- cultural objectives, this textbook can provide the students general knowledge about American culture and cross- cultural communication and to build a sense of cultural differences, acceptance of diversity influencing their communication with native-born speakers of English. Hence, students may communicate with people from different cultures verbally and nonverbally effectively. Each chapter from the textbook has two distinct sections: readings and exercises. However, the number of exercises or projects needs to be added for students to promote their learning autonomy outside class. Therefore, the purpose of this material is to provide exercises about cross-cultural communication and selected areas of American culture in the hope that the students can have further practices. This internal material has various types of exercises for each chapter: multiple choice, fill in the blanks, matching, true/false depending on the content of each chapter. Additionally, each chapter is recommended some free websites for learner autonomy. (see in the appendix). Hopefully this version can meet the needs of students and teachers.
