Assignment # ISSC Cybersecurity American Public University Hello everyone! It is my pleasure to be here today with ABC Consulting Group to provide you all with some details on some of the threats to information security. Every day we access online accounts that hold important information. Not only do you want access to your information but there are plenty of people out there that want to steal this information from you as well. Today I am going to discuss some of those threats to information security. So, what exactly is a threat to information security? Well, a threat can be defined as anything that takes advantage of a vulnerability to negatively alter, erase or harm your information (2019). As the threats against information security continue to grow and evolve, there are some common threats that everyone here should be aware of. One of the most common attacks against information security is malware attacks. Malware is malicious software that can include spyware, ransomware, viruses, and worms (2020). Malware is dangerous to your information because it once it gets inside your system it can block access or steal your information (2020). Malware can easily infect your device by clicking on a dangerous link or email, so always be sure you know the link you are about to click is valid and safe. Which brings me to another threat to information security which is something known as phishing. Phishing is the act that fraudsters use to try to get you to click on those malicious links. This can happen by making an email look inciting or from a legitimate source to trick you into providing your information such your login details or card number (2020). Sometimes, an attacker just wants to make things difficult for you. This could be due to personal motives or to cause your financial harm. This is when they resort to what is known as a denial or service attack. These type of attacks aim to flood the
system, network or servers which creates large amounts of traffic which in return, results in the system not being able to work correctly, unable to fulfill any requests needed for your information (2020). Although I would love to discuss more of these threats, I don’t want to take up your whole luncheon time so I have just one more that I feel it is important for everyone here to be aware of and that is social engineering. Social engineering happens when an attacker targets the weakest link or the security system, humans. The goal of a social engineering attack it to convince the user to willingly give up their information while being unaware it is going to be used against them (Moore, 2020). This can happen in person, over phones calls and even on social media so it is important to stay mindful and be aware of the information you are providing to others (Moore, 2020). Thank you all for having me today and allowing me to discuss some of these threats to information security. Enjoy your lunch and stay safe!
